CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — After a half-century of waiting, Wally Funk — who trained for NASA’s Mercury program but was denied the opportunity to go to space — finally got her time amongst the stars.

She was specially selected by the world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos, to accompany him, his brother, and auction winner 18-year-old Oliver Daemen on the suborbital trip.

The 82-year-old took the fourth spot on the inaugural crewed flight of its New Shepard suborbital spacecraft.

Funk flew on New Shepard as an “honored guest,” according to a post on Bezos’ Instagram, which also showed Bezos revealing to Funk that she would join the mission. She then beamed and yelled excitedly.

Funk volunteered as a member of the “Mercury 13” program, otherwise known as the “Woman in Space Program,” in February of 1961, which was a privately-funded effort intended to begin training women to fly in NASA’s earliest space programs. The 13 women in the program undertook all of the training and testing that the seven men selected by NASA for the Mercury spaceflight program undertook.

Funk became the youngest woman to graduate from the program, and she was told she “had done better and completed the work faster than any of the guys,” she said during a promotional video about her participation in the Blue Origin flight.

Funk even spent 10 hours and 35 minutes inside a sensory deprivation tank in one Mercury 13 test, outperforming famed astronaut John Glenn.

“I got ahold of NASA four times, and said ‘I want to become an astronaut,’ but nobody would take me,” Funk said. “I didn’t think I would ever get to go up. Nothing has ever gotten in my way. They say, ‘Wally, you’re a girl, you can’t do that.’ I said, ‘Guess what, doesn’t matter what you are, you can still do it if you want to do it,’ and I like to do things that nobody’s ever done before.”

Funk has extensive experience piloting aircraft, logging over 19,600 flying hours, and teaching more than 3,000 people how to fly private and commercial aircraft.

“Everything the FAA has, I’ve got the license for. And I can outrun you,” she joked.

But Funk didn’t need all that experience to fly on Blue Origin’s New Shepard vehicle. The fully autonomous spacecraft and rocket system is designed to allow virtually anyone to become an astronaut after just a few hours of safety instructions and training at Blue Origin’s facilities in West Texas.

New Shepard’s suborbital fights hit about three times the speed of sound – roughly 2,300 miles per hour – and fly directly upward until the rocket expends most of its fuel. The crew capsule then separates from the rocket at the top of the trajectory and briefly continues upward before the capsule almost hovers at the top of its flight path, giving the passengers a few minutes of weightlessness. It works sort of like an extended version of the weightlessness you experience when you reach the peak of a roller coaster hill, just before gravity brings your cart – or, in this case, your space capsule — screaming back down toward the ground.

The New Shepard capsule then deployed a large plume of parachutes to slow its descent to less than 20 miles per hour before it hit the ground, and Bezos and his fellow passengers were further cushioned by shock-absorbent seats.

According to a 2019 profile of Funk in the Guardian, Funk previously purchased a ticket aboard the suborbital spaceplane built by the Richard Branson-backed company Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin’s direct competitor.

It’s not clear if Funk will keep her plans to fly with Virgin Galactic as well.

Israel comes up many times in hot topics right now. A few days ago, we suggested that you come back to “Project Pegasus”, an Israeli spyware which is at the heart of a vast affair of global cyberespionage. Today, none of that though, as it is more hopeful news. Israeli scientists have just identified three existing drugs that could prove to be very effective in the treatment against COVID-19. We take stock of the subject.

A large-scale test

Professor Isaiah Arkin, the Hebrew University biochemist behind the discovery we’re talking about today (who works with a team of scientists at the same university), recently explained that he looked at more than 3,000 drugs to determine if they were appropriate in the fight against COVID-19.

Photograph by Isaiah Arkin, March 29, 2020 (Times of Israel staff).

For Professor Arkin, this way of finding the ideal drug was akin to “to look for a needle in a haystack”. The professor thus explained his motivations, for the account of Times of Israel :

We already have the vaccine, but we must not rest on our laurels, and I would like these drugs to be part of the arsenal we use to fight the coronavirus.

3 drugs stand out

Among the 3000 drugs examined, three of them stand out. It’s about of Darapladib (currently used to treat atherosclerosis), of Flumatinib (used in the treatment of cancer), and a medicine used in HIV treatment, whose name has not yet been released. To find out whether certain drugs might have been effective, the team of researchers put the substances in contact with living SARS-CoV-2 cells, and human cells. in vitro. The results obtained by these drugs have been commented on by Professor Arkin, who said:

The results showed that the drugs can protect cells from attack by the virus with efficiency close to 100%, which means that almost 100% of the cells survived despite infection with the virus.

Professor Arkin already hopes to be able to work with a pharmaceutical company so that the drugs he identified in his study are quickly tested clinically, as part of the fight against COVID-19.

It must be said that he is hopeful that these drugs are effective against different variants. If he is optimistic, it is because faced with SARS-CoV-2, the drugs in question here do not target spike protein, but rather one of the other two proteins, namely envelope protein, and protein 3a.

However, these proteins, and in particular the envelope protein, do not change from one variant to another. So this is why these drugs are likely to do their proof in the face of a multitude of variants, according to Professor Arkin:

This means that if we had disposed a drug targeting the envelope protein that would have treated the SARS epidemic, there was a good chance that the pandemic does not even see the light of day.

So this is good news for the fight against COVID-19. It remains to be seen what will turn out later clinical trials. And if you are interested in other technologies surrounding the study of this pandemic, we offer you a previous report on a new mask created by MIT.

China is desperate to rewrite the pandemic narrative. The Asian country rejected, Thursday, July 22, the proposal of the World Health Organization (WHO) to continue the investigation into the origin of the pandemic on its territory, where the first patients in the world of Covid-19 have were identified at the end of 2019.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus last week requested an audit of laboratories in regions where the first cases of coronavirus were identified – a reference to the Chinese city of Wuhan, a time at the epicenter of the ‘epidemic.

Chinese Vice Minister of Health Zeng Yixin said “Extremely surprised” by this proposal. It’s a “Lack of respect for common sense and an arrogance towards science”, said Mr. Zeng at a press conference.

Draw attention to the United States

China disclosed to the WHO on December 31, 2019 the existence of an outbreak of pneumonia cases in Wuhan. But Beijing has always fiercely fought the theory that Covid-19 could have escaped from one of its laboratories, in particular those of the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Long brushed aside by most experts, this theory brought to the United States by the former Trump administration has nevertheless returned in force in recent months in the American debate. For his part, one of the officials of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Yuan Zhiming, assured Thursday that his establishment had not been the subject of“No leak” or« accident ».

The Chinese authorities and the country’s media, on the other hand, regularly point to the Fort Detrick laboratory in the United States as being at the origin of Covid-19. Located near Washington, this laboratory is at the heart of American research against bioterrorism. According to Global Times, daily with a resolutely nationalist tone, five million Chinese Internet users signed a petition for the opening of an investigation into Fort Detrick.

The “cops” let coach Jesse Marsch (for RB Leipzig), top scorer Patson Daka (Leicester City), Enock Mwepu (Brighton), goalkeeper Cican Stankovic (AEK Athens) and defender Andre Ramalho (PSV Eindhoven) go. For Daka alone, his new employer from the Premier League is said to have shed 30 million euros, the transfer fee for Mwepu is estimated at over 20 million. There were also buyers for David Affengruber (Sturm Graz), Majeed Ashimeru (Anderlecht), Patrick Farkas (FC Luzern) and Masaya Okugawa (Arminia Bielefeld), which means that the double winner received more than 60 million euros based on unofficial figures.

The proceeds were again invested mainly in young players. The Pole Kamil Piatkowski (21) came from Rakow Czestochowa, the Argentine Nicolas Capaldo (22) from the Boca Juniors. The “cops” signed striker Roko Simic (17), the son of Croatian ex-team player Dario Simic, as a further perspective player. Otherwise, some recently loaned professionals such as Junior Adamu, Kilian Ludewig and Jerome Onguene returned. The German Matthias Jaissle was promoted from within his own ranks as the Marsch successor – all in all, there was a big transfer plus for Salzburg.

Demir could become king transfer for Rapid

Vice-champions Rapid lost the majority of seven players without a transfer, although Tamas Szanto had declared his career over in April. Mario Sonnleitner (Hartberg) and Deni Alar (St. Pölten) hardly got any appearances recently. Yusuf Demir could prove to be the king’s transfer – albeit with a delay: the 18-year-old jewel moved to FC Barcelona on loan for the time being, which can sign the offensive player in 2022 by means of a purchase option. The green and white newcomers Marco Grüll, Kevin Wimmer and Robert Ljubicic were free of charge, a manageable sum was paid for the left wing player Jonas Auer.

Barcelona brought Demir on loan from Rapid for the time being but have a purchase option

Rapid is a good example of those clubs that could still do something because of their involvement in European competitions. On the one hand, qualifying for a group stage would mean fresh money that could be used in the transfer market. On the other hand, players with strong international appearances could still recommend themselves for a transfer abroad, then the respective club would have to fill the gaps that have arisen. Puntigamer Sturm Graz, LASK and Austria also play in the European concert.

Hardly any transfer fees have been paid

Only the transfer from Affengruber was required to be transferred from the Graz additions. Manprit Sarkaria came from Austria for free, as did Alexander Prass from FC Liefering. LASK brought home defender Dario Maresic from the French club Stade Reims for a loan fee. A small sum was due to Hartberg for Florian Flecker, ex-Austria striker Christoph Monschein and the Frenchman Yannis Letard came free of charge. The sales of Mads Emil Madsen (Slavia Prague) and Reinhold Ranftl (Schalke 04) brought money to the cash register. Defense chief Gernot Trauner could emigrate abroad.

There was also a lot of coming and going at the clubs that were most recently involved in the relegation group. There was hardly a sporting leadership that did not replace ten players. However, replacements for new acquisitions were only paid very rarely, if at most in the low six-digit range. Loan transactions are still a popular tool in the Austrian Bundesliga.

“The red planet, for some reason, seems to be really popular with Earthlings,” said Dr. Lujendra Ojha, a Mars researcher and assistant professor in the department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Rutgers University. Yes, we do seem to have a fixation — think comic books, science fiction, movies and “War of the Worlds” — Orson Welles’ 1938 radio broadcast of an alien invasion of Grovers Mill in Mercer County.

Now our fascination is amplified by the IRL (in real life) adventures of the Perseverance space rover and its helicopter sidekick, named Ingenuity, which landed on Mars in February.

Perseverance is the fifth robotic vehicle NASA has sent to Mars since 1997. This mission is planned to last one Mars year, equivalent to 687 Earth days, but could go on longer.

Perseverance is notable for several reasons, including paving the way for human missions and being the first to try and find evidence of life on Mars. Those expecting these life forms to have antennas, tentacles and scaly, green skin will be disappointed.

“There’s probably no hope of finding anything beyond fossilized examples of microscopic life,” said Mike Shanahan, Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium director at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.

No flying saucers either. These microscopic life forms existed 3.5 billion years ago. “Mars lost its water billions of years ago, so if life got going on Mars when it had water, it probably didn’t have time to get beyond the microscopic in nature, which is one reason why it takes a lot of careful study to try and find even evidence of that,” Shanahan said.

It will be years before the soil samples collected by Perseverance are in the hands of Earthling scientists. “This is seen as only the first step in a three-part process,” Shanahan said. “Somewhere around 2028 they hope to have another lander land next to Perseverance to collect those soil samples. And the new lander is going to take off, take the samples to another craft in Mars orbit and bring the samples back to Earth.”

In December 2019, engineers observe the first driving test for NASA’s Mars rover at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Photo courtesy of NASA

Finding other life forms in our solar system can help us understand how life began on Earth, and by understanding the inhabitability of Mars we can learn how to protect our planet. “The data from the rover can provide some insight into some of these long-standing issues, like what happened to all the water that used to be on Mars?” Ojha said. “Or what geological prophecies let Mars to go from once-upon-a-time, habitable planet to the present-day, relatively dead planet.”

Perseverance also is notable for facilitating the first powered flight of a helicopter in another world. Kevin Conod, president of North Jersey Astronomical Group and planetarium manager for more than 30 years at The Newark Museum of Art, called it “a Wright brother’s moment for NASA” since it marks the start of a new era in aviation. Ingenuity is light (around 4 pounds), equipped with a camera, and its rotor blades are large for its size and spin fast for flight in Mars’ thin atmosphere, where gravity is one-third that of Earth’s. Ingenuity is conducting “short, little hops around Mars to demonstrate that it can be done,” Conod said, but the application of these test runs is huge.

“We may discover with this little helicopter that helicopters are the next great wave to explore Mars,” Shanahan said.

Another way Perseverance is contributing to future exploration is an experimental device on board that extracts oxygen from carbon dioxide in the red planet’s atmosphere. The oxygen can be used for breathing and converted to rocket fuel. Needless to say, traveling more than 38 million miles requires a lot of fuel at the pump.

“If you can find a way to extract oxygen from the Mars atmosphere, and convert that to rocket fuel, then that would be a game changer in terms of getting astronauts back from Mars to the Earth,” Shanahan said.

Mars missions cost $1 billion to $3 billion, Shanahan said. Compare that to the film “Avatar,” which, since its release in 2010, has grossed some $2.8 billion. “We’re getting a lot of return on our investment, especially with robot missions, because they add so much knowledge and the cost is relatively inexpensive,” he said.

There’s an existential benefit to Mars exploration as well. “A good civilization, a proper civilization, a civilized civilization is a civilization that expands on all frontiers of knowledge,” Ojha said.

All of NASA’s findings and visual images are available to the public. Mars.NASA.gov is an easy-to-navigate website, and the mission can be followed on Twitter and Facebook @NASAPersevere and @NASAMars.

After decades of juggling FIFA, Konami has decided to take a radical turn for its Pro Evolution Soccer football series. And starting with the name itself, which is now just eFootball, the designation that debuted in the latest edition of 2019 (which in 2020 was reduced to an online update due to the pandemic). The second major change is its business model, which is now free to play in PC, console and mobile versions.

The Japanese producer has worked in recent years to adapt the game to the Unreal engine, while adopting the tools to create a digital service, such as Fortnite or Rocket League, for example. The studio invested in recreating more realistic player animations, thanks to the “motion matching” technology. It will be possible to choose different moves in real time during the matches.

But what to expect from the new game? One of Konami’s greatest difficulties was securing official licenses for competitions, teams and equipment, which were exclusive to FIFA. It is now expected that the new game will receive content and updates more frequently. By being free, it will definitely offer micro-transactions that fans can buy, and as this is new territory for the series, the company has decided to take no chances and take the established name PES out of the equation.

However, don’t expect a package as complete as what was offered in the annual purchase. Konami said that the basic version of the game only offers local friendly matches with teams like Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Flamengo and others. The game will also be compatible between generations, meaning a PlayStation 4 player can play against a PlayStation 5 player, which is not the case in the current version.

In your “roadmap” of updates, paid content such as online leagues, team building mode, as well as cross-play support, ie playing between PC against consoles, will be expected. It will also be introduced a season pass (Match Pass) with perks for players who purchase it.

For winter, eSports competitions are scheduled to start, as well as the introduction of smartphone controller compatibility.

  • In the body that is to investigate the attack on the Capitol on January 6, the Republican representatives have caused a scandal.
  • Earlier, the Chairwoman of the Chamber of Congress, Nancy Pelosi, had rejected two Republican candidates.
  • The Republican minority leader Kevin McCarthy had threatened with a boycott.

You can find out more about US politics here

Despite a new escalation in the committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol, US President Joe Biden believes that there is cooperation between Democrats and Republicans. “But the well has been so poisoned within the past four years,” said Biden on Wednesday evening (local time) in Cincinnati, Ohio. “But I think it’s all starting to move. I don’t mean overnight, don’t get me wrong.” The Democratic President answered questions from citizens at a so-called town hall event on the US broadcaster CNN.

Pelosi rejects two Republican candidates

Previously, there had been a violent dispute over the committee in the House of Representatives investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Nancy Pelosi, chairwoman of the Chamber of Congress, had turned down two Republican candidates out of “respect for the integrity of the investigation” for the panel. The two are considered loyal supporters of the then US President Donald Trump. The Republican minority leader in the Chamber of Congress, Kevin McCarthy, threatened that Republicans would boycott the committee.

McCarthy accused Pelosi of a “political game” and “abuse of power. After a heated argument over the committee, McCarthy did not nominate five candidates for the committee until Monday. Pelosi, who had to confirm the appointment, rejected MPs Jim Banks and Jim Jordan as members Jordan is one of the most ardent Trump supporters. After his nomination, Banks had stated that the committee should investigate not only the attack on the Capitol on January 6, but “hundreds of violent political clashes last summer” from about ” Left-wing extremists “.

Spurred on by their president, hundreds of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, where the certification of the presidential election results was just being held. The situation escalated.

McCarthy said that the committee would not participate unless Pelosi accepted all five candidates. “No committee in Congress will work if one person chooses everyone who can attend,” he said at a press conference. The committee is to investigate the background to the attack on the Capitol. Supporters of Trump stormed the seat of the US Congress in Washington on January 6th. Five people were killed, including a police officer.

Biden with a clear message

“I don’t care if you think I’m Satan born again. The fact is, you can’t look at the TV and say nothing happened on January 6th,” Biden said, referring to conspiracy theories. “You can’t listen to people who say it was a peaceful demonstration.” He has hope in the people in the USA. “We have to get this over with. What do you tell your grandchildren or your children about what’s going on here?” Asked Biden. The President stressed the importance of cooperation in general. “Democracy has to stand up and show that it can achieve something.”

Biden was also confident about a bipartisan infrastructure package. Senate Democrats lost an important test vote on Wednesday to move the law forward. Biden has now been in office for six months – the infrastructure package is one of his prestige projects. (dpa / ska)

“This is about strengthening and improving our service, not creating a separate source of profit,” Reed Hastings, co-founder of the company, said at an analysts’ conference broadcast online Tuesday after the publication of quarterly results.

The games, initially designed for smartphones and tablets, will be added at no additional cost to existing customers.
It will be “a new category for us, as our expansion into films, animation and television shows,” Netflix detailed in its statement.

The video-on-demand veteran is approaching 210 million paying subscribers. In the second quarter, it made almost double its net profit from last year of $ 1.35 billion, but that result fell short of expectations from a market worried that the platform would slowly lose its lead. over its many competitors.

The group was pleased to be “ahead of its forecasts” in terms of subscriber growth, and recalled that the craze for video on demand during the pandemic was preventing normal comparisons.

But that does not change the conclusions of analysts: “Netflix seems to have reached the saturation of its market in the United States”, asserts Eric Haggstrom of eMarketer.

To dethrone the TV

He acknowledges that the company has been “able to jack up prices and increase revenues despite increased competition from cheaper services,” but notes that “Netflix has lost significant market share to Disney.”

From April to June, the platform garnered $ 7.3 billion in revenue, up 19%. For the third quarter, it expects 3.5 million additional paying subscribers, a level of growth over two years equivalent to that before the pandemic.

This result would reassure investors, who wonder if Netflix will run out of steam after having largely benefited last year from lockdowns linked to the health crisis and from its status as a well-established streaming pioneer.

The competition has since become fierce with old ones like Amazon Prime Video, and especially the recent Disney +, Apple TV +, HBO Max or even Peacock from NBCUniversal. Not to mention all the entertainment platforms that monopolize the attention of consumers, from video games to social networks.

The Californian company ensures that its earnings prospects remain immense, because streaming still only represents 27% of the time spent in front of television screens in the United States (including 7% for Netflix), against 63% for the so-called TV channels. “linear,” according to a study by Nielsen cited by the group.

Conquer the players

“Knowing that we are less mature in other countries and that this does not include mobile screens (where our share of user engagement is even lower), we have confidence in our growth reserves,” explains Netflix.

But in a business model based on subscriptions and not on advertising, more attention doesn’t necessarily translate into better revenues. Netflix has therefore undertaken to diversify, with an online store of merchandise and the recruitment this month of a manager in charge of video games.

The subscription-based operation will allow developers to not have to worry about integrating ads or buying bonuses, said COO Greg Peters.

Above all, “our job is to create incredible universes and characters, and we know that viewers want to go further,” he added.

“It’s a good tactic to keep and even attract new paying subscribers at the margin,” Loup Ventures investor Gene Munsters said on Twitter. “In all, there are approximately 2 billion monthly gamers in the world.”

“New sources of income such as derivatives and potential future experiments such as theatrical releases, podcasts and video games could bring growth,” says Eric Haggstrom. “But success in these areas is far from assured.”

The actor premieres this Friday ‘The Secret Garden’, an adventure and fantasy film for the whole family based on the novel of the same name

‘The secret Garden’, a fantasy film for the whole family based on the popular novel of the same name by British writer Frances Hodgson Burnett. Colin Firth (Grayshott, United Kingdom, 1960) stars in this story in which an orphan girl has to get used to living in a sinister castle that keeps a wonderful secret: a magical garden in which everything is possible. The actor, who plays a tormented character, shows once again why he is considered one of the great performers of his generation.

-Archibald is an intimidating character.

-It’s an enigma in Mary’s eyes. It’s the monster trying to hide from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ or ‘Jane Eyre’. We don’t see Archibald until well into the plot, and when we do find him, it’s an intimidating experience for her. There is something monstrous about him and she is right to call him a monster.

-Is it a range of emotions to play Archibald?

-Yes because he is a man in mourning who has never let go of pain. He continues to suffer terribly from the loss of his wife. The story represents the pain you feel. He has allowed pain to become the force that dominates his life, but from a toxic and negative perspective. It is not only about destroying himself, but also anyone close to his life. The chaotic environment in which he lives, not only the garden, but also his house, his son and the people who work for him, has caused everyone to be damaged by that pain that consumes him and that is terribly narcissistic.

-It is a story that already has many versions in the cinema.

-The original novel is among the most read by children and young adults around the world and this type of film, for the whole family, is the most popular genre. It is the perfect combination. ‘The Secret Garden’ is one of the best received works of the last decade and I hope that this new version will become a classic because, although it is based on the book, there are marked differences that make it a reinvention, because it has a new point of sight.

-And why do you think this story doesn’t age?

-There are two forces found in the plot. On the one hand, Archibald’s darkness, heavy and terrible, and on the other, the hope, optimism and color that floods every corner of the narrative. That color is a seed sown in each of the characters. The story is shedding layer by layer, it is a process that the viewer expects and we stop to maintain the intensity while the flashes of hope appear. The optimism in this story is explosive and that’s one of the reasons it never gets old.

An image from the shoot.

-The castle, is it another character?

-Undoubtedly. The sinister part of the castle has a strange beauty because this place was wonderful in the past. The castle has become terrifying with the passage of time from the pain it has accumulated, but you can tell that once there was a lot of joy in it.

-He works with Julie Walters again. They seem to have a soft spot for each other.

-You can ask anyone, everyone will tell you that working with Julie is nothing more than a joy and it is not the first time for me. We’ve done two ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Mary Poppins’ together, but this is the first time we’ve shared many scenes. I must admit that it has been absolutely delightful working with someone I have known for decades.

-Tell me about the children. They say in Hollywood that you should never work with children or pets.

-I do not agree with that phrase. Both actors are amazing. From the beginning of the rehearsals until the last take, they never ceased to amaze me. I came to the shoot thinking that I was the most professional because I was the oldest and the children turned out to be the most prepared. Technically they are extraordinary, in fact, I was the one who got the most confused.

-He seems very proud of his acting career.

-Yes I am. But that doesn’t mean that you haven’t made some wrong decisions in the past. Let’s say that now I can afford to choose in a nobler way.

-What is most important to you in a movie?

-All is important. I guess maybe the script, because that’s where the narrative comes from, but you can’t help but worry about the other aspects. What part of the body is most important? Is the brain the most important? It may be, but without the stomach you cannot live, so… everything is important. You also need a good director. A bad director can spoil a good script, but a good director can’t do much with a bad script.

Fed up with the gallants

-He played many romantic characters until he said enough.

-Yes. It’s true. Romantic roles are usually somewhat boring for the actor because there is little to sink your teeth into. For me, for example, the Bridget Jones film ended up being a pompous project that became one of the most successful romantic comedies in the world. These are things that I can’t quite understand.

– Did you get tired of that handsome image?

– It is that I like to interpret different personages. I’ve always wanted to become a perverted villain, but it’s something the producers don’t offer me. Everybody wants to see me as a funny man, with grease in his hair. I understand that it may be strange that I try to make interesting films instead of chasing success at the cost of pointless stories, but as an actor I like ambiguity, walking between success and failure. For me, the ordinary man is the richest to interpret. Heroes don’t interest me, they don’t tell me anything. The gray man’s conflict is not easy to judge.

Video.

The trailer for the movie.

– Are you proud of your Oscar?

-Sure. Of course. As an actor I enjoy recognition, but I don’t bother to worry about getting it. I don’t work thinking about awards.

– What has been the secret of your professional success?

I am very fortunate because I have a considerable height, a face that adapts to the characters, I speak softly and I have a perfect accent for the drama. I did not choose to start with main characters but secondary characters and thus I learned without being burned on the screen, aware that the hero is the only one who ends up dipping the bread in the sauce.

– You triumphed with the movie ‘The King’s Speech’, what is your attitude towards the modern monarchy?

– I have never been a good friend of the ‘establishment’ or of the authorities, nor of the monarchy. I know people who think that they are very important for the identity of a country and their nationalist sentiment stems from their status as monarchists, but I don’t consider it anything patriotic.
