Thanks to all of our Detroit Mercy community members who continue to adhere to the University’s vaccination requirement and safety protocols, particularly the use of masks on campus. These policies have been established for everyone’s safety.

As a reminder, please wear masks indoors, regardless of your vaccination status. We also urge you to remember that masks only work to slow the spread of the coronavirus if they are worn properly, which means over the nose and under the chin. If you see someone who is not wearing a mask properly, respectfully remind them. If someone reminds you, adjust your mask properly. We do this because we care.

As you may recall, on June 10, 2021, Detroit Mercy community members received a message that everyone must be fully vaccinated or receive an authorized exemption to this requirement. Beginning in October, we will require random surveillance testing of those students and employees who have not uploaded proof of vaccination, including individuals who have received an exemption to the vaccination requirement. Students and employees will be responsible for obtaining the tests at an offsite location and uploading results on a weekly basis. We will announce the details of this important means of monitoring COVID-19 cases early next month. Like many universities, we have made this decision based on the rising number of cases of COVID-19 in Michigan. We have an obligation to provide a safe, on-campus experience.

In addition to regular COVID testing, students who do not upload their proof of vaccination or receive an authorized exemption will have a hold placed on their account that will prevent them from registering for winter semester classes. Students who do not comply with the vaccination policy may also be dismissed from the University. Employees who do not upload proof of vaccination or receive an authorized exemption will receive a warning and then face consequences, including possible separation from Detroit Mercy.

If we all follow these University safety protocols, we will be able to remain on campus, living, learning and working together to build community. Faithful to our mission as a Mercy and Jesuit university, let us do our part to keep our community safe and work for the common good. As Titans Together, we can live our mission of concern, especially for the most vulnerable among us.

Thank you for your cooperation and assistance.

The actor’s speech Mark Ruffalo upon receiving the Golden Globes for best actor for his participation in the miniseries The undeniable truth, marked one of the most talked about moments of the ceremony.

As it was broadcast virtually, all the nominees lived the ceremony in their homes, which gave them the opportunity to share with their family and friends. In the House of Ruffalo It was no different, which is why the unexpected appearance of her children during her speech of thanks was very funny. But, outside of the anecdote, the content of his speech, although brief, was quite significant.

And it is that the environmentalist spirit of Ruffalo is greener than Hulk and took the opportunity to express it. Both in his social networks and in statements and protests, the actor has denounced the destruction of the planet, water pollution, climate change and, especially, the consequences of ‘fraking’, a form of extraction of highly polluting shale gas which has sparked various protests around the world.

WE HAVE A DYING MOTHER (…) AND IT IS MOTHER EARTH

The speech of Mark Ruffalo It was a message of hope, with a nod to the new era in the United States – post Donald Trump – and a call to reconnect as humanity: What connects us is greater than what keeps us apart, and the more we include, see and listen to each other, the faster we will heal our broken hearts and minds.

He then continued with the comparison of nature with a mother in danger of death: We have a dying mother as the mother of our story and she is Mother Earth. We must come to balance with her and honor her, and she will heal too, so let’s be brave together. Let’s turn the page to the cruel past of this nation.

For the hero of Marvel, this new year is undoubtedly a new opportunity to turn the page and increase the ecological care of the planet: The good news is inclusion and justice and caring for Mother Earth is emerging everywhere. The pious light of decency is breaking through the hateful dark storm we’ve been living through. We’re in this together, we’re the ones we’ve been waiting for so let’s do this now.

Remember that Ruffalo was one of the voices that permanently shouted against Donald Trump. Although his position is political, he has stated that he does not intend to run for any office.

MARK RUFFALO AND HIS ACTIVISM ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The daily life of the actor, as well as that of other Hollywood stars who changed his life and committed to important causes such as Leonardo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt O Marion Cotillard, it is tracked on your personal accounts. Here is a small tour of the causes that the actor usually pursues and shares with his followers in Instagram.

SUIT AND TIE SUPERHERO

Living a life committed to caring for the planet doesn’t prevent your acting career from being influenced by your activism. That is why the leading role in The price of the truth (2019) fit Ruffalo like a glove.

In the same style of Erin Brockovich, Rob Bilott (interpreted by Ruffalo) aims to unmask one of the largest corporations in the world after confirming the terrible effects of water pollution on the health of the families who live around it. Bilott, a successful lawyer for precisely large chemical companies, finds himself in a moral dilemma and decides to support the victims despite the risks. It is an attractive film because it is based on real experiences.

In an Infobae article about this film, it is mentioned that Ruffalo “He has been fighting for a long time against the climate crisis and militates for the increase in the use of renewable energies, he co-founded Water Defense in March 2011 to raise awareness about the impact of obtaining energy on water and on public health; the following year, it helped launch The Solutions Project, as part of its mission to spread science, business and culture that demonstrate the viability of renewable energies ”.

As we saw at the gala, Ruffalo still has a lot of enthusiasm to continue the struggles in favor of the care of the planet, a necessary role that goes beyond fiction.

THE UNDENIED TRUTH (2020), NOMINATED TO THE GOLDEN GLOBES

The undeniable truth, nominated for best limited series in the Golden Globes 2021, is based on the bestselling Wally Lamb novel, written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, and stars Mark Ruffalo, this limited series follows Dominick Birdsey as he struggles to care for his twin brother, Thomas, as he discovers the truth about his own family history.

The American Spencer Elden he was not just any kid. 30 years ago, when he was barely four months old and without being aware of it, he starred in one of the most famous covers in the history of music: Nevermind, the album that catapulted fame to Nirvana and put the grunge on the international radar. “It’s strange to be part of such a culturally iconic image because I really had nothing to do with it. My mother has a crazy story. He says that, when he was young, he had a kind of vision that his baby was going to be everywhere ”, he told the pages of The Guardian in 2015.

That’s how it went. Taking into account that the second feature of the extinct band led by Kurt Cobain has sold more than 30 million copies since its launch, and that the cover has been reproduced ad nauseam on all kinds of products from merchandising, His face is anything but unfamiliar, and it is found in literally millions of homes, entertainment venues, and showrooms around the world.

Initially, both the group and Robert Fisher, the art director of the Geffen Records label, came up with a much more explicit visual concept to illustrate Nevermind. “Kurt wanted a baby that was being born underwater. Back in those days, before the internet existed, you had to go to your local bookstore and browse birthing books to find photos. So that’s what I did … but there was no way to make a cover out of it. I couldn’t find any good photos. They were all too explicit to use ”, explained Fisher. After discarding the idea of showing a birth, they had no choice but to resort to a submerged baby.

“Then Kurt came up with adding a hook to make the scene more shocking. We spent the afternoon sitting thinking about all the fun things we could put in it. For example, a piece of meat, such as a large raw steak. Or a CD or something that served to symbolize the music. We went to eat and we were like: ‘How about a burrito?’ Also: ‘How about putting a hot dog?’ We were like this for hours. I don’t remember who came up with the idea for the dollar bill, but we all thought it was pretty good. “

With the premise already clear, it only remained to find an executing arm. The chosen one was the photographer Kirk Weddle. “At that time I was trying to make a name for myself as the boy in underwater photography,” he narrated in The Guardian in 2019, “but when they asked me to do the cover for Nevermind I had no idea if I could do it. Taking pictures of a baby was new to me. I didn’t want him to end up drowning because of me! ” Fortunately, there was no misfortune to mourn. Above all, because the hook and the bill were inserted in a laboratory days later.

For that session of just five minutes, held at the Pasadena Aquatic Center, he charged $ 1,000 (about 820 euros at current exchange rates). The figure covered everything: from the necessary equipment to hiring a diver for possible rescues. “I knew I had the good photo. It’s the thing about old-school photographers – as a professional, you need to know you have the right one before you go. However, I wasn’t sure if the record company would accept it. So, just in case, I decided to go to a children’s swimming school and put half a dozen babies in the water. There was a 10-month-old girl that I thought might work, so I took a profile picture of her. But the record company loved Spencer’s original, ”Weddle explained.

“They ended up choosing me. And I think it was because of my penis – a lot of the other babies were girls. I’m glad it wasn’t for something like an album by the Backstreet Boys“Spencer joked about it in the interview he gave in 2015. In the same add,” My parents knew who Nirvana was, but they weren’t very interested in the scene. grunge. My father, rick [quien trabajaba en Hollywood como artista de efectos especiales]At that time, he was attending art school and his friends often asked him for help with their projects. That’s how his friend Kirk called him and said, ‘Do you want to earn some money today and throw your son in the pool?’ My parents took me there, apparently they blew on my face to stimulate my immersion reflex [que hace que los bebés cierren la glotis en el agua], they immersed me, took some photos of me and took me out. That was it. They paid them 200 dollars and they went to eat tacos afterwards ”.

At first, the one known as Nirvana Baby he was proud of his aquatic feat. He even got the logo of Nevermind on the chest. After leaving his studies a year before graduating from high school, his parents encouraged him to enter a military school. It did not last long, by then I already knew that he wanted to dedicate himself to the world of art. His first break came thanks to Shepard Fairey, the graphic designer behind the poster. Hope (hope) that Barack Obama employed during his presidential campaign. She spent five years with him. Currently he continues to reside in Los Angeles and is professionally dedicated to urban art.

Of course, as in any good story, there is also a less friendly side here. Unlike when she was a teenager, over time Spencer has changed her speech about her participation in the famous cover. Although in 2011 took a joke that many people laughed at the size of his member – “my girlfriend knows the truth about that,” he said, in 2016 he told the magazine Time just the opposite: “When I go to a baseball game I tend to think, ‘Man, everyone in the stadium has probably seen me naked as a baby.’ I feel that my rights as a person were overridden ”. It also did not sit well with him that neither of the two surviving members of the band, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, have contacted him.

Another aspect that helps to understand this resentment is that the Eldens, beyond the 200 dollars that Kirk Weddle gave them, have not received since 1991 a penny for rights to an already legendary image. In reality, when Spencer turned one year old, Nirvana’s label just sent them a platinum album and a teddy bear. “Everyone who participated in the album has tons and tons of money. I feel like it’s the last of the grunge. I live at my mother’s house and I drive a Honda Civic. It’s hard not to get angry when you hear the amount of money at stake, “he explained in Time. Five years ago the possibility of taking legal action against Geffen Records was raised, but ended up giving up, thinking it was a losing battle.

The Smiths’ ‘Meat is Murder’ cover featuring Private Michael Wynn in Vietnam. According to him, no one told him that he was going to appear on the cover of an album.Emile de Antonio / The Smiths

Elden’s case is not unique in the world of music. It’s littered with covers, especially debuts that weren’t expected to sell much, that eventually became legendary. Roxy Music’s first album, titled after the group and released in 1972, has one of the most recognizable covers in rock, with model Kari-Ann Muller posing as a pin-up from the fifties. She charged 20 pounds for that photo.

In the case of the famous Meat is Murder (1985), by The Smiths, the disc contains a quadruple image of a soldier whose helmet reads the title of the disc. His name was Michael Wynn, he was from Ohio, he was then 20 years old and the image was captured by the photographer and director Emile de Antonio for his documentary on Vietnam In the year of the pig (1968). Wynn, like Spencer Elder, is not too happy.

On an official war veterans website, wrote in 2019: “They never contacted me to tell me that they were going to use that photograph. And I didn’t really like that The Smiths changed the words. I found out about all this when my sister found the album one day while shopping. ” In the original photo his helmet was not written “Meat is murder”, but: “Make war, not love.”

There is a more complicated job in Hollywood than to be a successful, millionaire and adored star around the world and not die trying: to be the son of the star in question. There are the numerous cases of most children born between cheers and tinsel, deprived of an ordinary childhood and then plunged into a self-destructive spiral that dyed their illustrious surname with a scandal yellow. Like Chet Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, accused of mistreatment and linked to far-right movements; Cameron Douglas, son of Michael Douglas, addicted to drugs and sentenced to several years in prison; or Weston Cage, son of Nicolas Cage, arrested for hitting the road after causing a traffic accident. Light years away from the seriousness of the events just mentioned, the episodes lived by Dylan Penn, daughter of Sean Penn and Robin Wright, have not been easily digestible either. But this doubly illustrious first-born, who for a long time seemed destined to be the next lost sheep of the movie mecca, has surprisingly become the next big star of the Los Angeles hills … with the Cannes red carpet as catapult.

Because Boulevard de la Croissette, prolific cradle of stars like Jodie Foster or Robert de Niro, has set its sights on this 30-year-old Californian woman who, at the hand of her father, presents the most important role of her short career in the contest . Flag Day, directed by and co-starring Sean Penn, adapts the memoir of journalist Jennifer Vogel, daughter of a con artist and bank robber who recounts in the book the complex reconciliation with her absent father. Its premiere in Cannes has resulted in a mixed reception among critics who, however, become unanimous when it comes to praising the young woman’s debut in a role of festival caliber. “His performance is fantastic. She reveals that she can be a great actress ”, she says. Variety. “Dylan is natural, balanced and captivating. She looks like a veteran ”, she adds. The Washington Post. Pete Hammond, de Deadline, believes that Dylan has inherited his parents’ acting skills. “She lives up to expectations with a multi-dimensional role that decisively positions her as a star in the making,” he adds.

Still from ‘Flag Day’, which fights for the Palme d’Or in Cannes.

With just a handful of jobs behind her back, she has made public her concern about the fact that she will take the lead role in Flag Day was seen as an act of blatant plugging. “Terrified” because people might think that she got the role just because her father was the director, the until now model asked her to postpone the project to shoot a couple more films and thus feel that she was “earning” it. However, the specialized press appreciates the chemistry that the couple gives off on screen, and Dylan reveals that he has enriched this dynamic with his own fatherly experience: “We have a complex relationship. We are both alpha and sometimes we collide ”.

Image of firms such as Ralph Lauren, Gap, Rag & Bone or Stuart Weitzman and a recurring spectator in the fashion weeks of Paris or New York, for years she has defended that her work as a mannequin was more a way of making a living than a professional passion. After working as a script editor and as an artist for storyboard (storyboarding), her future seemed destined to be behind the camera and not to follow in the footsteps of her celebrated parents. But it was they who convinced her to give her profession a chance when she confessed that her dream was to sit in the director’s chair. “They both told me separately: You are not going to be a good director if you do not know what it is to be in the actor’s shoes,” she said at the press conference to present the film.

Her face made the covers for the first time in 2013, when the media blamed her for the traumatic and media rift between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, a relationship that she has denied. Shortly after, Dylan Penn opted to star in a racy photographic report in the magazine Treats, to the chagrin of his parents, who were not even notified of the launch. “My father told me, ‘Okay, you’ve reached your limit. You better not go any further ”, although he acknowledged in Vanity Fair: “To be honest, if I could backtrack, I wouldn’t have taken so many clothes off. It was a bit naive. “

But her landing this summer in the promised land of Hollywood is not only significant because of the weight of her provenance, but also because of the controversial personal history that she has displayed so far, making her more inclined to swell the pages of tabloid chronicles of TMZ that the cinematographic ones of Variety. As published by the web Radar, Dylan has been arrested a couple of times for driving under the influence, and in 2017 she was admitted to a detox center. Her complicated maturity was portrayed by some photographs that came to light that year and which portrayed Sean Penn having, in the middle of the street, a heated argument with her boyfriend at the time, Jimmy Giannopoulos. With a Robin Wright as a witness and unable to hold back his tears, the irate Oscar winner reproaches his son in law while showing him a photo on his mobile screen.

Daniel Craig is the antithesis of Bond, James Bond, the cold, serious and distant British spy who has been giving life in the cinema for 15 years. Craig, on the other hand, is pure movement, say those who have known, interviewed and directed him. A man who does not stop still, who fills the room with his presence, chaotic, anarchic in his incessant movement. A guy who doesn’t stop talking, contradicting himself, even criticizing himself. Someone who shows his insecurities, which are not few. Someone light years away from that rude Bond who has given him global fame and who has now decided to say goodbye.

He himself confirmed it a few days ago, in an interview with the British edition of the magazine GQ. “Until now I have kept my mouth shut. But this is my last film ”, he told about No time to die, the 25th installment of the saga, where he shares the limelight with Rami Malek (winner of an Oscar in 2019 for his role as Freddie Mercury in the biopic the queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, who will play the villain this time), the French Lea Seydoux or the Spanish-Cuban Ana de Armas. Its premiere was to be on April 2, but it has been delayed until November due to the coronavirus crisis.

Craig, 52, didn’t want to be James Bond, but the job has lasted 15 years. It was not clear if it would be good for the role, if it would be the right decision for his goal of feeling a rush of adrenaline every time he got into someone else’s shoes. The order came almost by chance, as if from heaven. Literally: the producer of the tapes, Barbara Broccoli, noticed him during the funeral in London of a director of casting, Mary Selway. He was at the airport, about to fly to India, when a Selway daughter called him to be one of the coffin bearers. He agreed, and in that bright little church in the heart of Piccadilly it was clear to Broccoli that this hard-featured blond man was Pierce Brosnan’s replacement.

Craig didn’t see himself on paper. He went to the production company’s offices for what he believed was a contact. “This is going to take my whole fucking life,” he thought, and he even called his mother to ask her. One day he had an important meeting, he was without cufflinks, with a jacket pulled over, badly dressed. But it was so clear to Broccoli that he saw that it was impossible to turn down such an opportunity.

Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, from left, four faces of James Bond.

Since 2005 the shadow of Bond has haunted him and will probably continue to do so for the rest of his life. His franchise tapes have grossed more than 2.5 billion euros; only with the last one, he has entered 21. He has been the spy’s longest-lived interpreter, since he has been in his skin for almost 15 years. A skin that he himself has helped to change. Craig has been the architect of converting his alter ego in a different man, with more feelings, who can feel love or pain and far removed from the stale machismo that some of his predecessors gave off.

He himself had to endure some criticism from some Internet users when he left, a couple of years ago, with his daughter hanging from a baby carrier. He didn’t care … or he didn’t show it. The British do not have social networks, at least known. His privacy is essential, as it is also for his wife and mother of that girl – now two years old – the British actress Rachel Weisz. The couple had known each other since the mid-1990s, but reconnected in 2010, when they shot together. Behind the walls. The romance was sudden: they secretly married six months later, in 2011. Two friends and their children attended. Nobody else. And not a photo. “It would have been like telling a secret,” he explained later.

You have both been through serious relationships before. Weisz, 51, has a 13-year-old son with his partner of nearly a decade, director Darren Aronofsky. She had not been married before, had never contemplated it. “It was not my ambition, I was the complete opposite of that. So it happened suddenly, naturally and happily, “he said in an interview with Evening Standard.

For his part, Craig has a 28-year-old daughter with actress Fiona Loudon. She was born when he was 25 from a brief union of just 24 months. He was very young, but he had already lived a long time. At the age of 16, he had left home to take a summer theater course in London with a friend. The interpretation got inside him and the question lasted until he was 22 years old.
