Edwards Says Americans Should Give Up SUVs

    From Fox News.

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group that he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.

“I think Americans are actually willing to sacrifice,” Edwards said Tuesday during a forum held by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. “One of the things they should be asked to do is drive more fuel efficient vehicles.”

The former North Carolina senator was asked specifically if he would tell them to give up their SUVs, he said, “Yes.”

How about a little game – let’s count how many SUVs are parked around Edwards’ 28,000-square foot mansion (click here for hi-res photo).

Sometimes the jokes just write themselves….

It wouldn’t be so ridiculous except later in the article, Edwards is questioned on the hypocrisy of him telling everyone else to sacrifice while he lives in a 28,000-square house.

Edwards was asked during his appearance how he explained the contradiction of asking Americans to sacrifice while he’s living in a 28,000-square-foot (2,600-square-meter) mansion.

He said he came from nothing, worked hard all his life, has always supported workers and fought big corporations as a lawyer.

“I have no apologies whatsoever for what I’ve done with my life,” he said to loud cheers.

So in other words, since he “started with nothing” and “supported workers”, he shouldn’t have to sacrifice like the rest of us and give up his own SUVs. But the rest of us should…you gotta love it….

Glenn Reynolds: I’ll start acting as if it’s a crisis when the people who are telling me it’s a crisis start acting as if it’s a crisis.

Edwards is a complete joke. Hillary has to laugh herself to sleep every night when she thinks of the pathetic competition that she has for the primaries.

    3. Tina says:

Does it include the 12 SUVs owned by John F. Kerry, uh I mean his family?

    4. yetanotherjohn says:

Be fair. You have a candidate willing to throw more into the sacrifice pot than others (I counted three SUV’s in the picture which has to be above the average). Of course, this assumes that Edwards would actually make the sacrifice himself.

I suspect that he or some in his entourage when he made the speech arrived/departed in SUV’s. I suspect someone else should explain the importance to Edwards of SUV sales to Detroit automakers and thus in turn to the UAW.

Maybe he should use some of his strong relations with unions to get them to strike the SUV assembly lines.

    5. David says:

Do as I say not as I do.

    6. Bob says:

“… things they should be asked to do …”. Edwards is not one of them.

    7. If you only counted three you must have missed the ones behind the trees in front of the red structure (barn?).

    8. jblog says:

Have the Democrats officially adopted the motto “…but it’s okay/special/different when WE do it”?

Seems like that’s pretty much their position on, well, just about everything.

Kind of reminds me of Leona Helmsley’s “only the little people pay taxes” comment. Of course, she ended up going to jail.

    9. Clark says:

“I have no apologies whatsoever for what I’ve done with my life,”

Followup question unfortunately not asked: But haven’t you apologized for your Iraq vote?

    10. debbie says:

I would agree he should not have to apologize for his success, BUT NEITHER SHOULD WE!!!! He is the biggest hypocrite on the campaign trail and doesnt even know it. I have a comfortable middle class life, and in a whole year I could not fill his carbon footprint for one day.

    11. larry says:

How come nobody’s talking about the hundreds (if not thousands) of trees that have obviouly been removed in the picture. Trrible thing for a haed core tree hugger

    12. CambridgeREP says:

Ugh…this guy just nauseates me. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but you’ve gotta’ have a pretty pathetic slate of Democratic candidates when Hillary is the one in the pack who’s most appealing to me…

    13. bour3 says:

Man, talk about a non nequitur. By the way, that’s one ugly house.

    14. Rowdy says:

Hey, he’s got 4 solar panels on the roof and he also purchased a lot of carbon credits so that makes it all OK [in their twisted logic].

    15. Peg C. says:

I cannot believe anyone takes this guy seriously. What do the Breck Girl and Miss Teen South Carolina have in common? Great hair covering a vast emptiness.

    16. Dark Jethro says:

The “red structure” is the 15,000 square foot rec room:

Hell, the part that connects the 10,000 sq.ft. main house to the rec room is almost as big as the average american’s house:

This guy is the posterchild for hypocrits.

    17. masterchief says:

Mr. Edwards house resembles a big box retailer. Although I must admit I would prefer a Walmart at the end of my driveway rather than Mr. Edwards monstrosity.
I imagine a lottery winner in that property fresh out of the trailer park.

    18. Jbar says:

Anybody that builds a house that ugly can’t be too bright.

    19. Tucson Tarheel says:

This may be off topic, but does anyone know Lil’ Johnny’s stance on Global Warming? Looks like he’s cleared a lot of land there. Somehow, I doubt he’s planning to plant ‘baccer and soy beans any time soon.

    20. jones says:

I aspire to be a serf on that Manor House some day.

Go find “The Real Killers” John.

    21. peterike says:

Edward’s house is in this picture? Where? Is it somewhere behind that hotel? I can’t make it out.

    22. Rich Rostrom says:

I see 3 vehicles parked at the left end of the house, 2 vehicles parked in front, and several more in the parking area in front of the red barn-like structure (but the lot is obscured by trees). But even zooming in on the hi-res image, I can’t identify any of the vehicles as SUVs.

Just sayin’… Not that Hair Boy isn’t waste of oxygen, but _this_ charge isn’t proven by _this_ evidence.

(And what’s with all that dead bare sand around? I was a zillionaire ambulance chaser, I’d truck in topsoil and sod, right away.)

    23. Freemarket says:

I doubt all these cars are his. With a house that size, he no doubt has a domestic employee or two (more like twenty).

    24. TombZ says:

Let’s elect John Edwards so we can have a stronger central government tell us what we can and cannot do.

Then we’ll all get the message, ‘your base are belong to us’, but it won’t be funny.

It’s time to turn the tide back to freedom.

    25. Jayemay says:

Of course, when Edwards says Americans should be “ASKED to do is drive more fuel efficient vehicles.” He means we should be “FORCED” to do so.

After all, you don’t have to be president to ASK.

    26. Ed B says:

Are we sure this house picture is real? Surely nobody would build such a cobbled together mess as this is. Look at all the smaller structures jammed together that connect the main house to the red building. If Edwards helped design this, or even approved the plans, that is not someone I want to lead the country and make critical decisions.

    27. Mary says:

Shall we also count the number of trees that were mowed down to clear the land for his “estate”?
