The GOP should take Ohio Gov seat easily. People are starting to turn on Strickland bc all of his stupid budget proposals. People just dont know Kasich yet and that is the only reason that the polls reflect it as a tight race.

The drive to remake the nation’s health care system suffered yet another setback in Congress on Thursday when a pivotal group of House Democrats rebelled against leadership-backed legislation taking shape and sought additional time to make changes.
“We need to slow down and do it right,” Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., said outside a meeting of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 52 moderate to conservative Democrats. “It needs to do a much better job of cost containment” within the health care system, he added.
Other lawmakers said they were concerned about proposed tax increases, the rules on any government-sold insurance, and other issues that are key to implementing President Barack Obama’s call for sweeping legislation.
Ross said the group was drafting a letter to the Democratic leadership asking for additional time. Although he did not specify how much time, he said he believes no vote should take place until the fall — well after a midsummer informal deadline set by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The group met as Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee were laboring to put the final pieces in place on a bill that the White House has praised. The party’s leadership hopes to unveil it Friday and push it through committee next week.
“I promised the president that we would have legislation out of the House before we went on an August break. That is still my goal,” Pelosi said earlier in the day.

The Dems are seeing what we are here. I think they are already trying to minimize certain losses they are going to have in the mid-term elections. Lots of Dem congressmen are quite worried about their jobs and it is just becoming too perilous to vote on this.
Off topic, I talked to a friend of mine in west Michigan and he thinks that it is starting to turn red. People are sick of things up there. With a significant portion of Detroit’s population gone out of state, the demographics of the state have changed big time. Whether this will translate in the next few years remains to be determined.

Her supporters do not view her as the social conservative candidate. Social conservatives prefer Huckabee as a candidate in 2012; however, they think just as highly of Sarah Palin as they do Huckabee. Sarah Palin’s considerable base of supporters are attracted to her because she is the Beltway Outsider. She is the ordinary American who is fed up with the arrogant and incompetent Beltway elites who got us into the mess we’re in and yet still show such disdain for the ordinary hardworking people who want nothing more than for their government to be “on their side and not in their way.” Sarah Palin is our voice. When they laugh at her, we feel them laughing at us. Someday we’ll have the last laugh.

Sen. Arlen Specter and Rep. Joe Sestak traded sharp blows Thursday, a potential preview of their Democratic primary next year.
Specter called Sestak a “flagrant hypocrite” for challenging Specter’s Democratic credentials. Specter switched political parties in April after 29 years as a Republican when it became clear he was headed for an epic GOP primary battle.
Specter said Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral, didn’t register as a Democrat until 2006, when he ran for Congress.

I apologize in advance if I am misunderstanding you. I see Strickland favorable 44-40, and Obama favorable 59-35, but I don’t see Obama approval in the poll (I see you mentioned those earlier in the thread). If you mean the favorables, I’m not sure that there should not be a difference. In the economist poll this week, for example, Obama’s approval was 51-40, but he was “liked as a person” 66-20

I think there will be massive Democrat victories next year. Kasich and Portman are weak candidates who cannot connect to middle Americans. Economy will recover later this year.

No I got pulled into something at work cause some client of ours got in a fight with there co-lo and lost big time, and now have only till monday morning to up and move 12 racks of servers. For some reason we volunteered to get involved in helping to pull this off this insanity. So after about 12am tonight you may not see me for a couple days.
None of these polls in any state matter at this time.
Starting in Nov 2009 and into Nov 2010, all state and national elections will be referenda on the economy and jobs.
Democrats, as incumbent party, will need to defend the economy.
No head-to-head matchup is going to make a difference.
The degree of Dem losses will depend on the degree of voters’s unhappiness.
If the economy and jobs situation remains as today, Dems will lose the House, Senate will be a toss-up, and Dems will lose net 15 governorships.

Exactly my point. 2009, and then 2010, will be acceptance or rejection of Democrats. Does not matter who the GOP candidates are.
A monkey like Peter Fitzgerald can win if the voters are pissed enough.
If voters are pissed, any opposing candidate will look like Reagan to them.
On the other hand, if the voters are not pissed, then any idiot like David Patterson will sail through.
So I’ll maintain what I have said previously:
If the economy is perceived to be in the doldrums, it does not matter who the Republican candidates are.
If the economy is perceived to be improvin, it does not matter who the Republican candidates are.

I had a relative that was a fundraiser for Patterson after the obama campaign and worked out of his office. She said he had such a bad personality “really dry-zero charisma” that it was impossible to fundraise for him.

It seems to be a very nuanced distinction that most polling respondents wouldn’t pick up on. Even if we accept that most respondents would pick up on this distinction, how much lower can his approval numbers be from his favorable numbers?

I’ve seen the Jackson and Palin comparison made by other conservatives as well. What these folks are really talking about is stylistic similarities, rather than substantive similarities based on their policy proposals.
I’ve seen the Long-Palin one made, the Nixon-Palin, and the Reagan-Palin.

Obama is in a no-lose situation.
If the Dems ram through his program (cap-and-trade, tax increase, healthcare takeover, card-check, amnesty), he gets everything he wants.
For any voter fall-out, the Dems in Congress take the fall in 2010. Even if the Dems don’t pass everything, they still get blamed for the economic and jobs misery.
If the Dems are still in power after 2010, he uses them to consolidate more power between 2010 and 2012.
If the Reps take over in 2010, he positions himself as a centrist, signs some tax cuts etc., lets the economy improve, and takes credit into his re-election.
TB, I thought “approval” numbers were usually shorthand for a question of “job approval” versus “favorability” being, do you view a person favorably. The economist poll shows how this could make a good-sized difference. I could see persons viewing Obama favorably, but not approving of his job performance, just as, in the reverse scenario, someone could approve of, say, Ensign’s job performance but view him unfavorably. Ohioans have had more time to mull over Strickland than Obama.

Reminds me of an article I read in the fall (maybe Nate Silver, can’t remember). The article had a list of other articles thad had claimed “Obama is the next xxxxx” and there were like 50 different people from all ends of the spectrum (from Reagan to FDR to JFK and others). Wish I could find it, it was very entertaining.

The Constitution does mention God 73 times in the prologue which actually ended up on the cutting room floor. The final draft, however, omitted the reference because the “G” on the typewriter they used kept sticking.
