Unions 1, Kids 0. Politics over Principles

Juan Williams is mad and I don’t blame him. Obama said he would be “the education President.” But when push comes to shove, he has sided with the teachers union and is letting the DC school voucher program expire.

Here is a brief excerpt…”But over the last week I find myself in a fury.

The cause of my upset is watching the key civil rights issue of this generation — improving big city public school education — get tossed overboard by political gamesmanship. If there is one goal that deserves to be held above day-to-day partisanship and pettiness of ordinary politics it is the effort to end the scandalous poor level of academic achievement and abysmally high drop-out rates for America’s black and Hispanic students.

The reckless dismantling of the D.C. voucher program does not speak well of the promise by Obama to be the “Education President.”

And one more example of putting politics ahead of our nation…www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/04/politicizing_intelligence_obam.asp

Is this the change America voted for ? The candidate promised to rise above partisan politics ? Did he tell the truth or did he lie ?

We report, you decide…

    At the PPP blog, hahahah

    ” Adam Hearts Dems said…
I don’t understand how this is an accurate poll. I suspected it was off when the President only had a four point approval rating in a state he won by eight points, especially when he is approved by over 60% nationally in every major poll. But then you look at the crosstabs.”

Every major poll? How about Rasmussen, American Research Group, PPP itself, Democracy Corps, Newsweek, MSNBC/WSJ?

massachusetts is by far the best state

a law was made a distant moon ago here:
july and august cannot make you frown.
and there’s a legal limit to the snow here

    in provincetown,

the winter is forbidden till december
and by march the second all the ice must melt down.
by order, summer lingers through september
    in provincetown.

i know to you it must sound a bit bizarre,
that by eight, the morning fog must disappear,
and the rain may never fall till after sundown.
but in massachusetts that’s how conditions really are.
    in short, there’s simply not
    a more congenial spot
    for happily-ever-aftering than here
    in provincetown.

    provincetown! provincetown!
i know it gives a person pause,
but in provincetown, those are the legal laws.
the snow may never slush upon the hillside.
by nine p.m. the moonlight must appear.
    in short, there’s simply not
    a more congenial spot
    for happily-ever-aftering than here
    in provincetown.

  15. lisab says:

the bigger problems for the dems are:

a.) there have already been nationwide protests against the government (the teaparties) — they were small but still that is unprecedented. the july 4th protests will be far bigger and far WORSE. expect counter protests and i bet at least some incidents of human waste thrown on tea partiers.

b.) GM is on its last legs and no one is sure if obama will save it and preserve the union contracts (likely) or let it go and piss off my union the afl-cio.

c.) israel wants to attack iran. obama wants to stop them. IF israel does attack iran gas prices go WAY WAY WAY up which obama will like, but it really will make people angry. if the price of gas is $4 or more before july 4th the protests will be massive.

d.) if obama warns iran about an israeli attack … and people find out … the Jewish community will crucify obama

e.) if obama does not warn iran, all obama’s muslim friends will immediately turn on him … iraq will explode in violence war may be declared against israel by several states and … obama will be in a real pickle. help israel and we get $10 gas … don’t help israel and the Jewish community goes GOP

Do you now think Lonegan has a chance? The debates haven’t happened yet…though it’s questionable how much of an impact they will have.

  21. Tommy_Boy says:

MM: Last week, Christie pulled out of a scheduled May 5th debate…

SL: He’s pulled out of every debate, in every forum, we’ve made in the last 6 weeks.

MM: So I guess you think New Jersey Republicans would benefit from more debates?

SL: Chris Christie is scared to death to debate me. He cancels every single one, and is doing everything he can to avoid every debate possible, and I’ll tell you right now, when I debate him, I’m going to take him apart piece by piece. I will expose him for the big government, liberal Republican that he really is and I’ll ultimately win the primary.

MM: So would you…I guess the two debates that are required by law, they don’t include any other candidates?

SL: No, just one on one…yeah, it’s going to be great.

  22. Ga Voter says:

Back to school vouchers in DC area expiring – what a shame! To avoid massive large school boards, the charter school concept is the way to go. Charter schools normally have 1/2 to 1/3 the enrollment of traditional county or district school. The teachers are on a year to year contract. Why not more charter schools? Local school boards hate their success via awards, performance on tests and student happiness. They cannot accept the fact that they are a successful model for teaching kids. Therefore, the school boards limit the number of new charters per year.

Until the local powerful boards (and teachers unions) are put in their place, the quality of education in our country will continue to go downhill.

Final point, not every kid is as smart as the next. Never will be. Get over that fact America. That is why we have trade schools. Not every student needs to go to college. Both Obama and Bush seem to forget that by stating so, devalues the college degree.

Bring back respect to trade jobs without the unions.

  23. lisab says:

    George,

a democratic president should be … invincible!
succeed where a less fantastic man would fail.
climb a wall no one else can climb,
go into debt in record time,
destroy military ballots sent by mail.

no matter what reps do he should be unwinceable,
raising taxes should be his daily fare.
    but where in the world
    is there in the world
    a man so *extraordinaire*?

c’est moi! c’est moi, i’m forced to admit.
    ’tis i, i humbly reply.
    that mortal who
    these marvels can do,
    c’est moi, c’est moi, ’tis i.
    i’ve never lost
    in battle or game;
i’m simply the best by far.
    when words are crossed
    ’tis always the same:
    one word and au revoir!
    c’est moi! c’est moi! so adm’rably fit!
    a kenyan prometheus unbound.
and here i stand, with hope untold,
while the people wait for change to unfold,
i serve with michelle the hound!

the soul of a king should be a thing remarkable,
his heart and his mind as pure as morning dew.
    with a will and a self-restraint
that’s the envy of ev’ry saint
he could easily work a miracle or two.

to love and desire he ought to be unsparkable,
the ways of the flesh should offer no allure.
    but where in the world
    is there in the world
a man so untouched and pure?
    (c’est moi!)

c’est moi! c’est moi, i blush to disclose.
i’m far too noble to lie.
    that man in whom
    these qualities bloom,
    c’est moi, c’est moi, ’tis i.
    i’ve never strayed
    from all i believe;
    i believe in allah’s will.
    had i been made
    the partner of eve,
    we’d be in eden still.
c’est moi! c’est moi! the angels have chose
    to fight their battles below,
and here i stand, as pure as a pray’r,
    incredibly clean, articulate too,
    the godliest man i know!
    c’est moi!

  24. Brandon says:

Seriously? Joe the Plumber? All Lonegan has is gimmicks. He’s a joke.

  25. lisab says:

i doubt american Jewish people will “stick it” to israel if it is really in danger of being destroyed.

this will not be the yom kippur war where the usa almost went to nuclear war with russia over israel

you could see israel attacked on all sides with no military help from the usa. israel is only 9 miles wide at its narrowest point and that happens to be where 65% of its population live (tel aviv).

  26. Tommy_Boy says:

I am sympathetic to the argument that Christie should give Lonegan another debate.

  27. lisab says:

charter schools are not that great.

if you take all the best students and put them in one school … that school will do well.

it is a self-selection problem. those students who have good parents, who watch their children, who keep them out of trouble, that discipline them, and that make sure they do their homework …

are the same parents who take advantage of charter schools and vouchers.

  28. Brandon says:

Christie wants Merkt to be involved in the debate too. Lonegan just wants a one on one. That’s the difference.

  29. lisab says:

basically unless a school district segregates discipline cases, non-native english speakers, and special needs children from the rest …

the schools will do poorly in standardized tests. the problem is that many to not want to segregate these people because:

it stigmatizes children who are discipline cases … “puts a black mark on their record”

it keeps non-native english speakers from learning english quickly and from blending into society

it does not allow special needs children to adapt to the real world

  30. Phil says:

Johnathan Turley was just on and he called for a special prosecutor on torture and indicated there is no question that the prosecution should lead right up the chain to Bush and Chenney. he repeatedly used the term “war crimes”.

Obama is going to let Holder prosecute in the name of “rule of law”. Former administation officials will be prosecuted and Obama doesn’t have to take the heat for this since he can just say, hey,it’s my justice dept just trying to “find the truth”. Obama was pretty clear today that their strategy has changed – probably when Chenney dared to open his mouth. The timing is rather coincidental.

Expect Bush, Chenney, and Tenet among others to be hauled up before a grand jury which of course would indict a ham sandwich if the prosecutor asked them to.

Chenney spoke up and the Obama administration is hitting back, Chicago style.

Don’t screw with Obama and company. They play the hardest of hardball. Funny how the softball GOP hasn’t figured that out yet.

  31. Sharon says:

lisab…#17….Are you sure they will turn on him? If memory serves he didn’t make very many friendly overtures to the Jewish community during his campaign, in fact he seemed to reach out more to the muslem nations than Israel, and still they voted for him. I am not sure how much the Jewish electorate in this country truly care for the motherland.

  32. Phil says:

    Chenney = Cheney.

If the poor guy is going to go to jail I could at least spell his name right.

  33. lisab says:

the timing is due to the tea parties

  34. Phil says:

I find it scary that anadministration is on the verge of criminalizing an outgoing administration.

After this, we will never be the same as a nation. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

  35. Phil says:

The timing is due to the tea parties.

    You mean a distraction?

  36. lisab says:

    Tim V,

i am kinda sorta catholic or catholic with a small “c”.

i was a capital “C” catholic, and even on my church’s council, until cardinal law came clean, and i resigned.

what he did was perfectly legal, and the recommended course for schools and city governments … but i expected more from a cardinal

  37. lisab says:

    “You mean a distraction?”

partially … and payback … and he has to keep his supporters angry.

the state needs an enemy to focus hatred on.

think of it this way … if there are war crimes accusations … who are the tea partiers?

    people who support war criminals.

who are the ones who through human waste on tea partiers?

    patriots.

  38. jones says:

I can’t see Obama wanting Bush people on the stand explaining what the did and why. It will be better to keep Moonbats in the dark and have a boogie man.

If they have Bush Cheney explaining what they did and getting persecuted for it, and we get attacked…

  39. Diogenes says:

The moonbats think that most people disapporve of Guantanomo bay and torture. Actually most still support Guant. Bay and if you phrase it correctly most will support torture. In fact, national defense is the issue that won bush the election, not value voters.

It sliced into democrats and independents.

Obama is just out of his league here.

  44. Phil says:

True, if we get hit while this circus is going on, Obama is finished.

However, I don’t think Obama looks at it that way because:
his circle of which he has been inoctrinated – the Wrights and their kind – truly believe America is the bad guy in the world. Hence, Obama is looking at things through a radical eye. He’s not in touch with mainstream America on the terror issue. Doubt if he has a clue how badly this could blow up in his face. To him, prosecution is the mainstream thought.

Also, if we do get hit he probably thinks he can talk or spin his way out of it with the help of his MSM.

  45. jones says:

I can’t argue that O is out of touch, but attacking Bush for defending the US seems pretty obvious.

  46. lisab says:

that is obama is not directly involved

he can say he is not part of it

plus as jones said … it is better to have a boogieman right now. i doubt obama allows it to proceed to trial right now …

besides, a trial could find cheney not guilty … accusations are better

  47. Phil says:

I would think that this is a real political loser for Obama but what do I know about American opinion anymore. I now live in a country where vets are potential terrorists, a beauty contest contestant is called a “c**t for expressing that marriage is between a man and a woman and no one bats an eye, and a president is called a war criminal.

    We’re so screwed.

  52. George aka Freemarketer says:

    Lisa,

That was awesome! You have inspired me to pen my own lyrics to a well known musical number…if I ever get the time off work to do so. “Camelot” is an appropriate source given that the man (or at least his rabid worshippers) seem to think that he is the second coming of JFK, but I think I shall opt for a more saucy backdrop, say perhaps “Cabaret” or “Chicago” (Bullseye on that last one, no?).

    I love “My Fair Lady,” but let’s be Frank (as in Barney); there’s but one Banking Queen who fits that bill;

Why can’t the Lib’rals teach their
    Congressmen to speak?
    This verbal class distinction
    By now should be antique.

    Or something of the like…

  53. Libertarian girl says:

She should file a lawsuit. The judge (who is very likely gay) has already said publically that the only reason that she didnt win was bc of her response to that question.

I am a supporter of gay marriage but I think it was completely unfair for her to be judged on her beliefs. She should have been judged on how articulate and graceful she was in answering the question not on her opinion of the subject.

If they dont want to get controversial answers then they shouldnt ask those type of questions.

  54. Phil says:

Yeah Lisa, that toad went on MSNBC the next day and said he shouldn’t have used stupid “bitch” but rather the word “c**t”.

We have homophobes on our side of the issue and you have the Andrew Sullivans and this toad on yours.

Gay marriage, unfortunately, is just one of those hot button issues.

How it got into a beauty pageant is beyond me.

  55. Tim V says:

Lisab, a small c it is then.

  56. George aka Freemarketer says:

…and it was not Miss NC who pushed traditional marriage, but rather Miss CA (which is surely why that nitwit Hilton hit her on the topic, given Prop. 8).

No, Lisa, you’re not the only one. I have been pushing for a Suspension of Marriage Act to get gov’t. out of the marriage business completely. It would make everyone’s life a lot easier, and frankly, even though I am married, I don’t think I should have to file a different status on my taxes (I recall being livid having to do this as a single person, and more so when a married Sailor with a working spouse still gets a butt ton more of housing allowance than I did as a single Sailor; the private sector does not pay your more for being married). Just my two cents.

  57. jones says:

Yes, Perez Hilton, the judge, is very gay.

Idiot doesn’t see he has made a martyr.

  58. Phil says:

Just heard Fred Thompson say that he has no doubt the Obama administration is serious about prosecuting. He says Holder will appoint a special prosecutor.

    Obama is an absolute nightmare.

  59. George aka Freemarketer says:

Bring it on, I say; this will be an epic failure, and establish a terrible precedent for future Administrations who are hamstrung and fearful that their successors will attempt to cruciy them.

The more Cheney & Co. expose on the stand, I am confident the more that they will be vindicated. And, it will come across as nothing more than a partisan move.

  60. Phil says:

Why is it ok for Obama to say he is opposed to gay marriage, but Miss California is a “stupid bitch”?

    Just wondering.

  61. George aka Freemarketer says:

    It’s Springtime, Obama
    and Democrats!
    Lib’rals are happy and gay!
We’re prosecuting to a faster pace!
Look out, we’ve got a legal case!

    Springtime, Obama and Democrats!
D.C.’s a fine land once more.
    Springtime, Obama and Democrats,
Look out Repubs, we’re going on tour.

  63. EPH_ROVE says:

    George,

Ask your wife if any of her Jewish girlfriends consider themselves pro-life???

A need a good laugh tonight!!!

  64. George aka Freemarketer says:

Thanks, Eph; I knew you’d have my back.

When so-called Jews can see things from the perspectrive of the Third Reich and admire many of its “efficiencies” and arts (Leni Riefenstahl coms to mind), you know there’s big trouble in little Tel-Aviv. I’m catholic, and even I find it very disturbing.

Our modern universities at work, sad to say.

  65. George aka Freemarketer says:

No need to, Eph; had this discussion at a dinner last year. The wife was pulling for HRC, but the rest were all in for the Big “O.” They were vocally and particularly worried about a President McCain appointing more judges like Alito and Roberts to SCOTUS.

  66. George aka Freemarketer says:

I told them I was worried about a Persident Obama appointing more generals like McClellan; no one seemed to get the reference.

  67. George aka Freemarketer says:

I then quoted Michael Savage (which went over very well) in saying that we needed “more Patton and less patent leather.” My work complete, I returned to my glass of wine which turned out to be much better company than anyone else I met at the party. It wasn’t even a good vintage at that.

  68. Phil says:

Now he is president, and his administration so far is acting like it wants the potentially budget-busting lawsuits to go away.

The change isn’t sitting well with black farmers who thought they’d get a friendlier reception from Obama after years of resistance from President George W. Bush.

“You can’t blame it on the Bush administration anymore,” said John Boyd, head of the National Black Farmers Association, which has organized the lawsuits. “I can’t figure out for the life of me why the president wouldn’t want to implement a bill that he fought for as a U.S. senator.”

the tea partiers were an “unhinged mob”

  72. I hope Obama goes after Bush. It will piss off so many Americans.I love it. Please give the fire of the tea party movement more fuel. Please! Especially since it was a success both now and bc we haven’t been attacked again.

  74. EPH_ROVE says:

“American Jews couldn’t give a rip about Israel. When Iran wipes Israel off the map all you’ll get is a collective yawn from American Jews.”

Sad but true Phil. About a 100 years of ultra secular reasoning will be the reason.

But there is some hope – Orthodox is growing faster than you might think. And there are more “Born again Jews” than ever before. Those are previously secular/athiest Jews who now follow and live an Orthodox lifestyle. Let’s just hope they vote that way.

P.S. My rabbi rescently told me that the ONLY reason Jewish woman did not vote for MAC is b/c of Palin. I’ll let you figure that one out for yourself.

  75. EPH_ROVE says:

“Why is it ok for Obama to say he is opposed to gay marriage, but Miss California is a “stupid bitch”?”

    BETTER QUESTION…

WHAT IF SHE SAID SHE WAS FOR GAY MARRIAGE AND STILL LOST????

    HHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  76. EPH_ROVE says:

    70. George – hahahahaha

My days of going to Jewish “wine and cheese” parties are long OVER!!!

When I’m invited now I just say “only if you go with me to the Mesa (AZ) gun show with me on Sunday”

    End of conversation. LOL !!!!

  77. The reason Jews vote Dem is found in chapter 45 of the Torah, p 233, verse 3-6…”And so the fields of corn were covered in not corn, but paper, and on thy paper the infidel called ACORN deemed it necessary to unite all Jewish brethren under the unbrella of the nitwit Democratic Party or no matsa ball soup for you!”

  78. George aka Freemarketer says:

It’ll be a cold day in Hell before my wife accompanies me to a gun show. We have already had a lengthy discussion on where my mini-arsenal can go once we move back to the mainland (it’s hard to keep and bear arms in Hawaii -what with shipping- so I am storing them at my parents’ house). She sees no need for them, and when I brought up the hypothetic example of me being able to protect her if we had an intruder, she actually said that “at least we’d die together.” I still have no response to that, except that I will likely purchase one of those little safes with the quick acting digital combo lock so she has no clue what’s inside. Honestly, though, I think some of that extremism will temper once we have children and she sees the light on protecting our family.
