Thursday Morning open thread

The ice and sleet just missed Memphis this morning.  So all the local schools are open.  My morning commute upstairs was  quite easy today.

We are barely in the second month of the massive $787 billion stimulus package.  Most of the spending impact does not start until 04-01-2009 (tax cuts-food stamps-unemployment benefits) plus many of the construction projects will not start until the summer.  Yet we are already hearing talk of another stimulus package.  What about the $30 billion in ad ons to the recent Budget bill?  Are we so anxious to spend that we cannot even wait until some of this stuff kicks in before we start passing bills to spend more??

I mentioned to my wife that this country needs to make some sacrifices to get through the hard times like our “greatest generation” did during the Great Depression and WWII.  She said what do we need to do?  Here’s a partial list:

1.  Those folks who borrowed money for a house and now find themselves under-water.  Don’t walk away.  Do what you can to pay that mortgage, live up to your promises that you made and don’t ad to the default problems.

2.  Spend your money in a responsible way.  I personally would rather not spend money on foreign oil or clothes made in China but money spent in local eateries or plumbers or local stores seem like good spends.

3.  I know our businesses need to do what they need to do to survive and prosper.  I personally would rather see salary/benefit freezes or even pay cuts then layoffs.  Fedex cut all its salary workers by at least 5% to avoid layoffs.

4.  Take a job -any job- to keep America going.  I know folks think I am kidding when I say that I want to read stories about Mexican workers going back home because Americans are doing their jobs but I am not.

5.  Stop smoking-lose weight-stop having babies (if you are under 18 and un-married)-be more responsible for your actions.  Live your life in such  a way that will make America a better place now and in the future.

6.  Look  for ways to help your family-friends-neighbors that don’t involve laying out tax payer dollars.

Any more ideas?

KSDK — St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch was asked to be the new US Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, replacing Catherine Hanaway at the post, sources tell NewsChannel 5.

According to the sources, McCulloch, a Democrat, turned down the post to stay prosecuting attorney for the city.

Hanaway, a Republican, is a former Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives. She was sworn in as US Attorney in April 2006.

U.S. lawmakers sizing up health benefits for taxation

    Lori Montgomery
    Washington Post

WASHINGTON – With President Barack Obama’s plan to tax the rich to pay for health care facing deep skepticism on Capitol Hill, key lawmakers are pressing a different way to raise money: taxing the health benefits workers receive from their employers.

Since companies began offering group health insurance on a large scale during World War II, the value of that benefit has never been counted as income, reducing workers’ taxable earnings by an average of $9,000 a year for family coverage.

In recent weeks, however, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the tax-writing Finance Committee, has repeatedly advocated changing tax laws to include employer benefits, arguing that it makes sense to fund the health care changes by sucking cash out of the existing system.

Do you think Sen. Dodd will be subject to the same scrutiny for this sweetheart deal in Ireland from a man he secured a pardon for as the now jailed former Rep. Duke Cunningham for the sale of his Del Mar, Calif., property for a $700,000 premium over fair value?

  28. Phil says:

Tax the health care benefits one receives from the employer?

Uh, is this the middle class tax cut Obama promised us? So if your employer pays $250 towards your health insurance premium each month and you are in the 20% bracket:

    250 X 20% = AN EXTRA $50 per month in taxes.

But, but with that big middle class tax cut the messiah cut our taxes an average of $52 a month (drops to $32 a month in January). So much for that tax relief Obama kept bragging about during the campaign. That didn’t take long, did it.

Hahahaha Change you can believe in.

In many states that depend heavily on coal for electricity (most notably NC (60%), VA (49%), and OH and IN (both more than 90%)) bills will skyrocket to pay for Obama’s cap-and-trade plan. That non-tax will cost a lot more than our “Making Work Pay” handout.

The liberals who supported Obama knew that his campaign promises were all lies so they aren’t surprised by any of this. The Indies and Rinos who voted for Obama are the ones to blame for BHO getting elected, because they were stupid enough to fall for the lies.

BHO – no more earmarks (before election day).
BHO – no more earmarks after this year (current position).

To eloborate my opening thread-there are people who are walking away from homes worth nearly a million dollars only because they owe more money then what the home is worth. Here’s an article on that

    http://hamptonroads.com/2009/03/life-jacket-some-under-water

You see 20 to 25 % of homeowners who own more on their homes then whats its worth. By skipping payments or simply walking away they are entitled to either relief.

I say Man up America and live up to your obligations. Don’t take the easy way out. Right now more people who are working full time are walking away from their homes & their home loans then ever in the history of the USA.

In 1980 to 1982 when unemployment was far higher then today people did not walk away from their homes.

If you want to help America be responsible

    Ah Keybored,
