Tuesday Morning Prayer Breakfast-Little old dime

I have a hard time posting a thread on Tuesday morning.  I get up at 5:45 and attend a Men’s prayer breakfast at Church every Tuesday.  Then I have one trip I make to a Customer’s location later in the morning.  So Tuesday morning is a busy time for me.  I am moved  to comment on my Tuesday activities not because I want to move this site towards Spiritual matters instead of Politics but rather because financial /policy matters have human consequences.

Today at Breakfast the crowd was a little smaller then normal. The meal is cheap, $3 for a full breakfast and juice/coffee/milk.   Our routine is to eat Breakfast-then we can bring additional pray needs to the group-sing a hymn-then break into small groups.  Within the small group (3 people) we pray through the Church’s prayer list (about 80 people with various needs) and we also lift up specific needs within among ourselves.

In my small group I prayed with R. who is about 65 and C. who is 40.  R.’s wife has Cancer and she will probably not see 2010.  He is in good spirits as  ignores his chronic back pain and focuses on how so many people have rallied around him and his wife.  We have several young people on our prayer list who have either had liver & kidney transplants or will need them shortly.   R. mentions that as hard as his wife’s condition has been, she was never sick a day in her life until this cancer hit, one he just really feels  for those parents with sick kids.  R. finishes his thoughts by mentioning that his neighbor who has a MBA and lives in a 300K house has just lost his job.  This man is in his 40’s and wonders whether he can keep this house.

Then Mr. C. discusses his situation.  He is looking for steady employment and worries about the effect his Mother’s illness has had on his Father.  His Mother is Comatose and has been that way for several years.  Mr. C.  has struggled financially since his marriage broke up.  I mention as my requests my Mother in law’s health, she broke her hip recently and wisdom for a college choice for my daughter.   As is our habit who pray for the others in our group and those on our big list but don’t dwell on our own situation.  We reach out to encourage others and pray for others.  Its not supposed to be a what about “me” time.

So what does all this have to do with politics/policy decisions/economics or the American way?  For one thing our prayer requests and our sharing our conditions puts a human face on what is going on in America.  Even just showing up at breakfast teaches me that as one fella is unemployed.  When he comes to pray I pay for his breakfast as $3 is still a lot of money if nothing is coming in. I don’t lightly say that America needs to suffer the effects of a down cycle to be able to bounce back.  As America suffers some economic pain I can put  a human face on that suffering.   That’s one reason as America binged on debt I did not rejoice but rather worried about the consequences of it when the bubble burst.  I feel the same now as we are trying to borrow our way to wealth and job creation.  We may bounce back a little quicker but at the price of a long term decrease in the quality of life due to a huge National debt.

Finally let me say that I am glad that Obama called for an era of responsibility.  I have not see a lot of followup or much of a call to sacrifice but that’s what we need to handle this economic downturn.  My $3 gift of breakfast is nice but this young man has also benefited from our  Church resume pass around.  We have started an email list where resumes are emailed around to people who either own businesses or work in management at businesses.   There are 200 or so folks on this email chain.  Our Church has started a fund to help people out with phone bills-food-utility bills if they are falling on hard times.  Its not a lot of money but I believe its going to people that are really in need.   Our Church is also involved in a local faith based medical center where folks who are struggling can get free or low cost medical care.

I see suffering and at the same time I see a lot folks who are coming together to help others out.  I wish just once our bosses in DC would say “folks its not going to be easy and we have to make huge sacrifices to make this happen”.

oops-about a little old dime to cheer you up?  A Jim Reeves favorite

Nice post. The msm always depicts conservatives as uncaring. Nothing could be further from the truth. Look at the last Presidents charitable contributions and compare them to the current Pres. Numbers don’t lie.

  4. Tina says:

No lectures from the Democrats on giving would be nice. I do not want lectures from the likes of the Vice Dummy on charitable contributions.

  5. MDefl says:

    But,but,but…Bush!

Liberals like to help but only if they can build institutions to solidify power. Conservatives, on the other hand, prefer to help directly, without having to make people dependent upon the opium of government programs.

  6. MDefl says:

    Knight,

Of course they won’t report that. The msm is closer in ideology to that nut than to Bush or any other Republican who values liberty and freedom.

  7. MDefl says:

Arlen is the “top” RINO. He was on Sellout Smerconish’s incredibly boring radio show this morning and he plans to run in 10 as a Rep. It is quite clear that he enjoys screwing the party. That’s cool Arlen, we will enjoy screwing you in the 10 primary.

  8. jeffp says:

Thanks for sharing that time at the prayer breakfast.

  9. Erich Heyssel says:

I just contributed to Specter’s re-election, while I may not be wild about him or his politics. It is imperative that he beat Toomey. For, if Toomey wins, he will likely lose in 2010. It is far better to have a a Republican who votes 50% of the time with his party, and who may be able to sway. Then a Democrat who vote with the Republicans never – someone like Congresswoman Schwartz -. If by some miracle Toomey wins in the general, he is far too Conservative to last but one or two terms. See Santorum in 2006. He was swept into office in ‘94. He then BARELY survived an under funded challenge in 2000. Then got crushed in 2006, and would’ve lost even if it hadn’t been an Anti-GOP year or a Casey running against him. But Toomey won’t win in 2010, should (Save us if he is) the GOP nominee. Do we really want to be the party that throws people out just because we have differences? I thought we were the party of tolerance. The party of all people. A classic example of throwing a member out in Lincoln Chafee, we made him feel less, and less welcome by moving further and further to the right, and he left and endorsed Obama. We’ve done this to COUNTLESS members. Ex-Rep Schwarz is another great of example of this. He was a moderate Congressman from Michigan. In 2006 he lost in the primary to a right wing guy (Tim Walberg). Walberg then barely won the seat that was Schwarz’s, with less then 50% against an under-funded challenger. Then in 2008, the Democrats saw they could beat him. They recruited State Senator Mark Schuaer to run against Walberg. Now Schauer is a Congressman from Michigan, and that seat is now Democrat. If Walberg had butted out in 2006, then likely Schwarz would still be a Congressman. Who, while not always voting with the party, would some times. But do you think you’d ever see Schuaer voting with us? Not a chance. So, to you club-for-growth, right-wing, “throw the RINOs out” – Republicans. You are only hurting the party!

  13. Polaris says:

#13 As I’ve said many times, if the GOP were in the majority, I might sympathize and even agree with your PoV.

Since the GOP is in the minority (and tiny minority at that), in order for the GOP to have ANY political traction, they have to vote as a unified bloc no matter what. Specter either could not or would not do that.

Bye, bye. The GOP can’t afford members like Specter any more (and Specter would lose anyway in PA). PA is much different than it was even six years ago.

    -Polaris

  14. Erich Heyssel says:

Specter is a driving force in PA. They would re-elect even if Governor Casey rose from the dead and challenged him.

  15. Erich Heyssel says:

And our MEMBERS have voted in a unified force in the House, and almost in the Senate. The only three in the Senate who didn’t, can’t afford to.

  16. House Sparrow says:

I used to really like Arlen Specter. His vote for the stinkulus changed that. He also seems to be OK with card check, and that is not OK with me.

If Specter prevails in the primary, I will begrudgingly vote for him in the general, but that’s where it ends. No primary vote. No campaign donations. Not even a Specter yard sign. 100% of my efforts for 2010 will be going into helping win the Governorship. After eight years of Rendell, we need it badly. My GOP Congressman will crush the Dem by 20% as usual, so no worries there :)

  17. Polaris says:

#19 Eric, you haven’t kept up in PA. Almost all of the liberal/moderate republicans in PA have become democrats and PA is a closed primary state, and Specter has alienated the GOP core (and for good reason).

As for your comment about the senate, almost only counts in Horseshoes and Handgrenades. Specter betrayed his party. Now he has to pay the price (and he wouldn’t get reelected anyway. The demographics are against him).

    -Polaris

  18. Polaris says:

#19 Horsefeathers. They could afford to have voted as LOYAL members of the GOP. They CHOSE not to.

    That’s fine. Choices have consequences.

    -Polaris

  19. Diogenes says:

I can understand both sides of the debate but I still respect Specter. For one, I prioritize judicial matters very highly and Specter help get us Thomas and Alia on the court while torpedoing RINO Harriet Meiers.

As for the economic stimulus bill, I think it was a necessary poison. The GOP would’ve been framed as obstructionist if it had not been passed and continued to be blamed for the bad economy. After the stimulus, the Economy belongs to Obama.

We had to suffer through Jimmy Carter in order for Ronald Reagan to become president. The public has forgotten why the democrats are inept. Let the democrats self-destruct while we do our best to limit their excesses so that they are easier to fix once this over.

As for card check, it is an incredible anachronism to still have unions in a modern economy. Arlen voted the democratic line when his vote didn’t matter. I wonder what he will do now. He has not made clear is position.

  20. lisab says:

why is it a MEN’s prayer meeting?

  21. Diogenes says:

Clearly it is one where women like you are put where they belong lisa: barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

Sorry, I’m just playing the social conservative to type for Keybored.

  22. Erich Heyssel says:

Demographic shifts don’t matter as those once-centrist GOPers, who are now Dems, will vote for him regardless in the general. And I know about the closed primary-God help us if he loses.

  23. Polaris says:

#26 Oh really? What on earth makes you say that? Every PA poll I see shows Specter getting destroyed both in the primary and in the general…..and the new Democrats seem as unlikely to vote for him as the old.

Moreover, the even if they were, they can’t vote in PA’s primary which is closed and Specter has alienated the GOP core which in a closed primary state is fatal. [He nearly lost to Toomey for a reason!]

    Because Eve was decieved

  25. Tim V says:

I used to go to a Saturday 8am prayer meeting. It was a group of 4-6 woman and every other Saturday the Pastor would attend.

  26. Tim V says:

It was not the church that I usually attended during the week.

  27. Tim V says:

One Sunday the preacher at the church where I went to the prayer meetings quoted George Soros from the pulpit 3-5 times. It made my blood boil.

  28. Tim V says:

His sermon was twisting a scripture and using it to suppport socialism

  29. Tim V says:

I guess you could say he is a member of the Christian left.

  30. MDefl says:

The bottom line – Specter is toast. Toomey can win in the general especially in a non-pres election year. It will be an uphill battle but it is far from impossible.

I have.detailed postings in other threads on why Specter is toast. I follow PA very closely. Erich, you can choose to do whatever you want with your money but you may want to find candidates with a chance at victory.

  31. rdelbov says:

    Lisa B

the women of our Church also gather on Tuesday for small group bible studies and they also have several prayer groups that met before, after and during those group meetings.

Our Church has found that men pray better together as do women. Its a communication issue. women open up better to other women and vice versa

I might add that we also have several times where men and women can pray together.

No way she drops out. Dream on Jeralyn.

  35. Tim V says:

she did not delete it BUT i was unable to post sometime shortly after that, she closd ranks and only allowed those who agreed with her or those who had “parent tags ” her more longtime posters.

  36. Tim V says:

what she did was censorship and i stick to my charge.

and i dont like being called a liar but the bigger story is the left wing and msm joining together in a planned co-ordinated attack on palin.

it sure worked on my wife…

  37. Erich Heyssel says:

Well, First off because past elections have shown it. Specter (in the general) always wins a considerable number of “other” voters, and Democrats. As for the primary – I don’t disagree with you. The right is upset with him because he is a right wing ideologue, and that’s going to cost him. All I’m saying is it’s better to have a 50% Republican in the caucus, then a 100% Democrat in the other caucus.
