Monday morning thread-”new era of Responsibility?

Obama called for a “new era of responsibility”  on 01-20-2009.  So how are we doing?  Here’s a story that got a lot of play-here’s a UK story on it

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/financetopics/financialcrisis/4958269/Ohio-school-receives-700-applications-for-janitors-job.html

Yup 700 folks applied for a Janitor’s job.  In a way that’s a good thing that folks are prepared to take a job maybe any job.  Of course the pay is good for a janitor’s job, the benefits are great at government jobs plus government jobs tend to be quite secure.  I will make no comment on as to how hard school janitors work as appearances can be deceiving.

I will remind folks of several comments that I made in reference to Obama’s inaugural address.  1st Americans need to take a job-maybe any job to get this country moving forward.  I would love to read an article about illegal Mexican immigrants-even legal Mexican immigrants-returning to Mexico because Americans were taking jobs plucking chickens, cleaning houses, raking leaves, cutting grass and unloading trucks in the middle of the night.

My second point is that a new American work ethic means that friendly customer service and hard work again becomes the norm in American.  A dramatic increase in productivity does not mean fewer workers are needed it means that businesses make more money and more people can be hired.  How many people have recent experiences with retail or service people where you say “wow they did great”.  That’s what American needs to be about.  I not want to read about 700 people applying for a job I want to read about people pulling together to make a go of a business.  How about this for the American gung ho spirit:

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009903080384

These folks aren’t feeling sorry for themselves.  They are out there trying to save their jobs!!!  I wished I lived in Nashville to help them out.

Illegal immigrants might get stimulus jobs, experts say

By William M. Welch, USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES — Tens of thousands of jobs created by the economic stimulus law could end up filled by illegal immigrants, particularly in big states such as California where undocumented workers are heavily represented in construction, experts on both sides of the issue say.

  2. knova_red says:

I thought all those shovel ready construction projects were going to provide jobs for laid off middle class white collar knowledge workers.

I work in the engineering/construction business, I could have told you who does the actual building. (which is why I wanted to find a means to let those who want to work legal.)

  9. Howard Dean 1/20/13 says:

    Not sure.

  10. Tommy_Boy says:

C’mon Phil and Howard Dean, Obama was against drilling before he was for it before he was against it….he’s a model for consistency at least in his inconsistency with offshore drilling.

58% of Republicans now strogly disapprove of Obama; this guy is starting to piss off people on our side.

  11. Brandon says:

    Rasmussen Obama Approval 3/9/09:

    Overall 56%/43%

    GOP: 22%/78%
    DEM: 89%/11%
    IND: 43%/55%

    MEN: 52%/47%
    WOMEN: 57%/43%

    WHITE: 49%/50%
    BLACK: 92%/8%

  16. Brandon says:

#14. Indies make up about 390 people in the sample, which I assume holds about a +/- 4% margin of error.

  17. Brandon says:

    Wikipedia scrubbing their Obama profile.

Wikipedia, the online “free encyclopedia” mega-site written and edited entirely by its users, has been deleting within minutes any mention of eligibility issues surrounding Barack Obama’s presidency, with administrators kicking off anyone who writes about the subject, WND has learned.

A perusal through Obama’s current Wikipedia entry finds a heavily guarded, mostly glowing biography about the U.S. president. Some of Obama’s most controversial past affiliations, including with Rev. Jeremiah Wright and former Weathermen terrorist Bill Ayers, are not once mentioned, even though those associations received much news media attention and served as dominant themes during the presidential elections last year.

  18. Tommy_Boy says:

I still don’t trust that “other” number…it seems that the white number would be much worse with the “other” number at 56%.

It seems that Rasmussen has a difficult time with polling Hispanics.

  19. Frank says:

    Folks,

… and Rasmussen’s strongly disapprove is the highest yet. Overall difference of 6%.

Wow. It only took less than 2 months and Obama is approaching 0% difference.

    AMAZING.

    Frank

  20. Brandon says:

#19. My guess is that it is such a small sample, that it is going to vary wildly sometimes. If I remember correctly, Hispanics were roughly 9% of the electorate in 2008. This is a 1500 person poll, so that means 135 polled are Hispanic. This means that there is a +/- 8 point margin of error, so that number could just as easily be 64%/35% which is what I’m guessing you think it should look like.

  21. EPH_ROVE says:

    12. Those numbers dont make sense. According to RAS there is a two point difference in the generic DEM/GOP ballot. And he’s only at 43% with INDies. So there is a huge over sample of DEMS then. I think in reality around 52% if you re-weight correctly.

  22. EPH_ROVE says:

    1. NOT THAT’S CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN FOLKS!!!!

  23. Brandon says:

#22. The DEM/GOP ballot is different than the party ID. He uses the party ID poll to weight these national polls. This month it is Dem 41.1%, R 33%, I 25.9%.

  24. EPH_ROVE says:

  25. Ἀβιά says:

My husband I believe in teaching our children personal responsibility. The military isn’t the only way to establish independence and earn money for college, there are also various state and federal programs. In Georgia, where we live, the state (or is it a federal program?) offers what is called the HOPE scholarship (I think the man from Hope, may have had something to do with the name of the program). South Carolina has a similar plan called the Palmetto Scholarship, for in state kids.

In order for our son to continue to receive funding under the HOPE program, our son needed to maintain a 3.0 GPA. So my husband and I came up with this brilliant incentive plan. If our son’s report card after the first semester was 3.5 or higher, we would provide him with a car. The car we offered him, a 10 year old clunker, proved to be just the right incentive. When you are a college kid, wheels are wheels (dates maybe?). Since his high school GPA was only 3.3, we were a little doubtful that he could do it, but guess what, he ended up with a 3.7 after his first semester! We were so proud of him.

As the incentive of the car began to wear off, his grades did begin to slip a little but he still managed to maintain a GPA of 3.03 (whew, that was close!).

After he graduates from college, he will be is enlisting into the AmeriCorps program for a full year. After he completes one year of service, he will receive a grant of $4800 to apply toward graduate school. We will provide him with free housing but we expect him to work part-time to cover personal expenses. For transportation, he’ll have to commute using public transportation.

  26. Tommy_Boy says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but the spending freeze that Boehner has endorsed is only for the fiscal year 2009, which ends in July…isn’t that accurate? John McCain’s proposal during the campaign trail was no different. The dems are making it seem as if Boehner has proposed no new spending as a solution to the entire crisis when he may only be talking about the next couple of months.

  27. American Thinker Fan says:

    #22/24

Rasmussen uses the 3 month trailing average for party ID. That’s why this number is so important.

The Dims have lost 2 points in the past two months.

Party ID and congressional generic are really the two polls to watch at this point.

  28. Tina says:

As I predicted, his approval #s are going to the mid 50s and sinking fast.

That program was created by an act of the Legislature here in the early 90’s, at the behest of Governor Miller. It was from a campaign promise he had made. It is funded by the Ga. Lottery.

That campaign, incidently, was run by James Carville and Paul Begala.

Several other states have adopted this idea, but it originated here.

  36. Jody Beaumont says:

Although I have a full time job as a legal assistant and feel pretty secure, I am applying at various places for part time jobs on the weekends: Curves, Whole Foods and as a night receptionist at a women’s spa. All of this will be saved to help fund my son’s last year of college so he won’t have any loans. Kids hopefully learn strong work ethics from parents who display one…

  37. knova_red says:

30-Buffett isn’t having buyer’s remorse. Berkshire Hathaway and he is sitting on a ton of cash and as the market goes down he is going to use it to scoop up good companies at bargain prices. To some degree we can say that Obama’s policies as they relate to the stock market are a form of welfare for the “cash rich.”

Whatever the government does to help the economy will likely benefit some people who made poor financial decisions, but Buffett said Americans should realize that everyone is in the same boat.

“The people that behaved well are no doubt going to find themselves taking care of the people who didn’t behave well,” Buffett said.

I find it hilarious that the one Rasmussen poll that the media picks up on is a poll indicating that most Republicans do not believe we have a “clear leader.” Why don’t the media outlets report on other Rasmussen polls, including the one showing Obama’s approval rating sinking like the Dow?

As for Republicans not having a leader, Tammy Bruce touched upon a theory as to why it’s difficult for a leader to emerge among conservatives:

“Ironically, one of the many important and attractive elements of the conservative ideal is that it is principally resistant to the very notion of “leadership.” The always astute Ann Coulter has noted that conservatives have no leaders, per se. The individualistic nature of the Authentic Conservative eschews the idea of being organized or led. It is, as they say, our greatest strength and greatest weakness. Yet, as a former leftist organizer I know the power and importance of a clear and directed message.

Reagan understood this, too. Reagan was a man, however, who did not “lead” us — he reminded us who are as a people and then cheered us on.”

However, the real reason he’s supporting Barry probably has more to do with PR.

There is a small underground movement (see Doug Kass) that is questioning Buffett. By playing the lib dim, he still gathers a fawning press who never takes a critical eye.

    Obama’s Double Talk

    By Robert J. Samuelson
    Monday, March 9, 2009; Page A15

To those who believe that Barack Obama is a different kind of politician — more honest, more courageous — please don’t examine his administration’s budget. If you do, you may sadly conclude that he resembles presidents stretching back to John Kennedy in one crucial respect. He won’t tax voters for all the government services they want. That’s the main reason we’ve run budget deficits in 43 of the past 48 years.

Obama is a great pretender. He repeatedly says he is doing things that he isn’t, trusting his powerful rhetoric to obscure the difference. He has made “responsibility” a personal theme; the budget’s cover line is “A New Era of Responsibility.” He says the budget begins “making the tough choices necessary to restore fiscal discipline.” It doesn’t.

    WAPO

  76. MDefl says:

BTW, Wiki has removed ALL references to the fact that Southern Senators fought against the legislation as hard as they could. Instead, they focus on a few GOP congressman who were against preclearance in 2006. No bias at Wiki. It makes me want to vomit.

Manchurian Candidate’ Starts War on Business:

    Commentary by Kevin Hassett

March 9 (Bloomberg) — Back in the 1960s, Lyndon Johnson gave us the War on Poverty. In the 1970s, Richard Nixon launched the War on Drugs. Now that we have seen President Barack Obama’s first-year legislative agenda, we know what kind of a war he intends to wage.

It is no wonder that markets are imploding around us. Obama is giving us the War on Business.

Imagine that some hypothetical enemy state spent years preparing a “Manchurian Candidate” to destroy the U.S. economy once elected. What policies might that leader pursue?

He might discourage private capital from entering the financial sector by instructing his Treasury secretary to repeatedly promise a brilliant rescue plan, but never actually have one. Private firms, spooked by the thought of what government might do, would shy away from transactions altogether. If the secretary were smooth and played rope-a-dope long enough, the whole financial sector would be gone before voters could demand action.

Another diabolical idea would be to significantly increase taxes on whatever firms are still standing.

That is by far more chilling that the killing itself. There are leftists on there actually cheering that this was done and that the church deserves this after years of Christianity abusing non-believers. Sure there have been abuses of religion in world history, just as there are abuses from non-believers as well. That’s why we got rid of the union of church and state. The man killed in this instance was a Baptist…and baptists have historically never been tied to any government and as such have never been on the side of the persecutors of others. But for goodness sake, what must be taught these days in government schools for people to cheer like this when a pastor is shot dead in his church? All the more reason for me to keep home-schooling.

    No doubt

It’s interesting how the second generation does this. I have no doubt that Howard Dean’s father (of Dean Witter fame and fortune) thought Howard was worthless.

(Note: That’s the DNC Howard Dean NOT our Howard Dean)

However, in Buffett’s case he did very well in investing. I wonder if his outlook would be different if he ever actually ran a real business.

there is a link i losted yesterday which i think is a great tool as you can change the “item you are evaluating in the top drop box” I am going to toss it out again and this time take a look at…

there are probably other important variables that i have yet to analize

  104. knova_red says:

108-I don’t agree with his politics, but saying that Buffett has not run a real business is wrong. You should read the book. Buffett got where he was by hard work and his brains. He was not one of these big businesses that got into bed with the government in order to make his money.

I belong (very tangentially btw – my wife is more pious) to a Methodist church that happens to be fairly liberal. We are disaffected Catholics.

It is funny how the looney lefties view all religious figures. They don’t even take the time to look into the persons views. Of course, they have no respect for anyone who is not 1000000% in agreement with them. Ask Juan Williams.

  106. MDefl says:

I wonder how Buffet feels now watching his money go bye bye?

  107. MDefl says:

A great day on the market for the Obama Presidency – only down 1.2%. Change we can believe in!

the methodist church is Christian-lite …

they have only two sacraments … play pianos not organs, only have one week of lent … their christmas story is the little drummer boy … :)

LBJ did not kill your sweetheart … that was a vietnamese who may not have had much choice.

if you go to vietnam btw, at least in the south, they do not hate americans, which is not surprising given their traditions … but one lady put it this way to me –

the french and the japanese wanted to enslave us, but the usa tried to help us ….

she also said that the day the war ended they all felt a sense of tense relief that the war was over, with fear of what would happen next, especially as the nva began to knock on doors to find out who was who … (and some people were taken away).

  116. lisab says:

“How long before the congressional democrats start running for cover.”

a.) a long time, imo it won’t start to really hurt obama unless the dow breaks 6,000, and only really seriously if it breaks 5,000 … then he will probably be a one termer.

b.) i would not tie your criticisms of obama to the dow. while fun and convenient now, it is a forward looking measure and will start upwards well before the recovery starts. if you focus on the dow, obama will correctly point to a rise … from say today’s level of 6,500 to say 7,500 as proof his policies work — it will only be proof that the major bleeding has stopped.

c.) the dow is fickle … i would not base your analysis of the day to day market movements …

    just saying … :)

  117. knova_red says:

Right as usual lisab. But if you look at the significance of the dates that I put in we are actually talking about over reach:

1938: Roosevelt’s 2nd term. He has tried to pack the Supreme Court and the New deal is not doing so well. Huge republican gains in mid term elections

1966: LBJ is giving us guns and butter and expanding the government more than any administration since. Huge republican gains in mid term elections.

1994: Clinton overreaches on health care, again trying to expand the government into peoples lives more than any administration since LBJ. Huge republican gains in mid term elections.

    just saying…

    What book should I read?

Also, making and keeping money are two different things.

I would also recommend a review of Edmund Pratt’s analysis on Buffett. The late ex-Chairman of Pfizer had some interesting insight on the Oracle.

yes, i agree with your analysis, well at least the 1938 piece. my knowledge of history ends with the british empire around 1955.

  128. lisab says:

    Tim V,

also have you tried invega for bipolar symptoms?

the teen i work with takes a high dose of it for schizphrenia, but i hear that low dosages work wonders for some people who are bipolar … because both diseases involve dopamine and invega helps control dopamine.

for my teen friend it is like a happy pill … she went off her meds for three days and became suicidal … back on it for two days and she is back being a productive member of society … well … as much as a teenager can be :)
