Friday Morning open thread

Obscure US Rep Gillibrand apparently is heading to the US senate.  She has two years of legislative expirence and no accomplishments on her resume.  Seems like a great pick for a senate seat.  Bennet in CO was sworn in on Thursday as that’s state’s interim pick.  He also is very light in  legislative experience and while he has some mixed success at the Denver school system.  That hardly seem to justify a US senate seat for him.  In my opinion its strange that Gov Bagman of IL in picking Burris ended up picking a man of experience and accomplishment.  While Governors Ritter and Paterson picked young and untested rookies.  Very strange.

The Stimulus package seems to be dragging along.  Its funny to me that much of the actual spending will not take place until 2010.

The weather in Memphis has moderated a bit as we had highs in the 60’s on Thursday.  My money saving tip today is if you are comfortable right now as far as the temperature in your house or work.  You need to lower the thermostat by 1 degree.  If you are still comfortable you have saved money and lowered the world’s C2 count.  Now I love sweaters and we keep the house at 63 or 64 degrees.  That might be a bit low for some but test those lower limits guys.

Second day on the job and Obama has voted present on Gitmo.

  2. Tim says:

Well, you folks on here should like Gillibrand much better than someone like Kennedy and Cuomo.
She’s a Blue Dog, and the NRA loves her.

A bit too Conservative to suit me, but I don’t get a vote. So….

  3. Howard Dean 1/20/13 says:

Obama doesn’t understand anything about Nat-Sec or military matters.

    Neither does Panetta.

    Maybe they’ll learn from this:

“The emergence of a former Guantánamo Bay detainee as the deputy leader of Al Qaeda’s Yemeni branch has underscored the potential complications in carrying out the executive order President Obama signed Thursday that the detention center be shut down within a year.”

You know who else went through this rehab program?

    Yup!

    Our 19 9/11 terrorists.

Obama and his administration will be held accountable for any attacks on our land.

Nice news on the NY selection. She’ll fall into line with the rest of the Dem caucus, but as a member of the NRA it’s one less vote on Obama’s gun agenda.

Childproof all guns? Sure Barry. Bhahahahahaha!

  16. Phil says:

Killing terrorists in Pakistan? Boy, Obama’s Hollywood friends won’t like that. I mean, what kind of a terrorist outreach program is that?

  17. Bobby says:

This will make 2012 very interesting. A moderate Dem and a moderate Rep facing off in a super liberal state. It could be a dogfight.

  19. Mose says:

It’s hard not to like the Gillibrand pick if you are a Republican – she’s probably the least liberal person that could have been selected. As an added bonus, the pick opens up her R+3 district for a special election, and we know how wacky those can be. The GOP is on a bit of a roll with special elections (3-0, GA senate and two LA house races). Maybe we can keep it going in NY.

  20. rdelbov says:

Now what will the AG Coumo do?

  21. Eph_Rove says:

    Phil,

I think that pick was for Colorado? No?

  22. Eph_Rove says:

    Never mind, you are correct.

But check out her answer regrarding the NRA endorsement:

“In defense of the endorsement, Gillibrand told FOX News that she comes from a “hunting family” and “wants to support hunter’s rights.”

  25. Big Joe says:

    Rdel,
I used to keep the house at 62 degrees. We had a cheap humidifier installed w/ that made the house feel 2-3 degrees warmer.

If I ever got chilly, I did 25 pushups. And I was good for the next several hours :)

Of course, now that we have 3 young children, the house is at 68. Can’t afford them getting sick. Luckily global warming is helping us not to use much heating resources this winter. Its supposed to be 70 in Atlanta today. woohoo!

  26. Tim says:

    Atlanta, Joe?

  27. Big Joe says:

Yes. Atlanta :) Am I wrong? It was 65 just a half hour ago when I went out to lunch. Maybe its just the pollution.

  28. Tim says:

No, I meant that you live in Atlanta?

  29. Big Joe says:

West Cobb. A few miles outside of the ATL.

Your up in the mountains right? I think we had this exchange already :)

  30. Big Joe says:

Gillibrand appointment should be good new for the GOP.

Not only is she conservative, but her open House seat could very likely go to the GOP.

  31. Phil says:

That seat will be redistricted out of existence by the NY assembly after this term so it would be a very shortlived GOP pickup.

  32. Just John says:

    2007!

  33. Aaron_in_TX says:

“He was released to Saudi Arabia in 2007″

Hmmm, that would be under the Bush administration.

  34. Aaron_in_TX says:

“Obama and his administration will be held accountable for any attacks on our land.”

I hope you held Bush accountable in 2001. He did have the intelligence indicating an attack in August of that year. Or did you blame Clinton for 9/11.

  35. Brandon says:

She’s not as conservative as you think.

“After talking to Kirsten Gillibrand, I am very happy to say that New York is poised to have its first U.S. Senator who supports marriage equality for same-sex couples,” Van Capelle said.

“She also supports the full repeal of the federal DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) law, repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) and passage of legislation outlawing discrimination against transgender people. While we had a productive discussion about a whole range of LGBT concerns, I was particularly happy to hear where she stands on these issues.”

  36. rdelbov says:

    Big Joe

three young kids. Get off this site and raise those kids???

    Only kidding just a bit.

Its tough when the kids are real young to keep it at 63.

At age 7 or 8 or 10 or 11 kids are so much more able to handle cooler tempertures. At 63 I will be in a big sweater and my 9 year old will be in shorts and bare footed.

  37. Eph_Rove says:

    35. Great post. She also back-tracked on the NRA endorsement – she’s for hunting rights only.

I think she’ll lose in the primary – probably to Carolyn McCarthy. There’s no way an NRA member could win a statewide election in NY now or anytime soon. Same as a pro-life candidate in NY.

  38. Aaron_in_TX says:

Gillibrand’s “conservatism” comes from the gun issue. She’s also somewhat fiscally conservative, but then a lot of democrats, including Obama, say that. The gun issue isn’t all that suprising, since her district is exurban and is located near some parks where a lot of hunting takes place.

Gillibrand supports gay marriage, is pro choice, believes everyone should have access to health care, etc… Sounds like a reliable democrat to me. If she makes unpopular decisions, she’ll be beaten by liberals in the next primary.

The easter egg for republicans is that they might pick up her house seat.

  39. Phil says:

It doesn’t matter who the Dem is from NY. It a left wing place and that’s how the population thinks. Kind of like Aaron’s lefty environment in Austin.

  40. Aaron_in_TX says:

Looks like the old McCain is back, remember the press’s favorite republican? I love it that he chided Cornyn.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/22/AR2009012203928.html?hpid=topnews

I think it’d be sweetly ironic if McCain ends up being the 60th vote on a tough issue.

  41. Eph_Rove says:

    39. That’s why I moved 2000 miles away 15 years ago bro!

  42. Eph_Rove says:

    40. there is a strong movement here in AZ to get JD Hayworth to run against McCain in 2010 for Senate. JD is the only Republican who can get the money needed to give McCain a fight. Plus he has a very popular raio show on M-F during the afternoon commute. I hope he runs.

  43. Aaron_in_TX says:

Admit it Phil, you know you like Austin :)

    Except for the traffic.

  44. Aaron_in_TX says:

If I were McCain, I’d retire. Now that Napolitano is gone, it’d probably be a safe hold.

  45. Eph_Rove says:

    44. Crappy nappy left with very low approval ratings. She would not even be me for Senate.

  46. Big Joe says:

It’s weird when Eph writes a regular post.

I’m so used to his rambling ALL CAPS over the top diatribes :) :) :)

  47. Eph_Rove says:

    OBAMA IS NOT MY PRESIDENT!!!!

  48. Eph_Rove says:

WHY ARE WE STILL IN IRAQ HUSSEIN?????

  49. Big Joe says:

That’s more like it EPH! Promise me your taking your lovastatin. I dont want you to hyperventilate now and have an episode :)

  50. Darrell says:

So now Blago compares the attack on him to the attack on Pearl Harbor. What an insult to those who died at Pearl Harbor.

  51. Eph_Rove says:

LOL! This board is quite theraputic, But my DR said i only have to take those pills every other day now. My last check I was at 140. Way down

  52. Eph_Rove says:

    IS IT 2012 YET??????????

  53. Big Joe says:

“my DR said i only have to take those pills every other day now”

Was that before of after O got elected? HEHE .. what we would do w/o our beloved EPH????

  54. GA Voter says:

SO, Mr. “I have a bracelet too” is now saying to the GOP leaders “I Won”. Me thinks Obama is going to get a real awakening when the GOP fights tooth and nail not to go ahead with TARP II. NOW is the time for the GOP not to cave into the media boy-toy.

AND, why is OBAMA droning Pakistan? Did he get the UN approval?

  55. rdelbov says:

Pearl Harbor was typical of what happens when the “Yellow are not Mellow”

Now a serious note Bagman was certainly incorrect in his Pearl Harbor reference.

Here’s one more comment on Pearl Harbor. I am not saying that FDR knew about the attack before it occured but FDR certainly was not eager to placate the Japanese. An naval aid in 1930’s made a list of 10 areas of dispute or concern that the Japanese had with the USA. The aid opined that the actions of the USA government could either ease the Japanee mind or could possible friction.

item #1-where to base the US Pacific fleet in California or Pearl Harbor. Well the move to Pearl was not welcomed by Japan.

item #2-Scrap metal sales to Japan-the USA in the late 1930’s banned scrape metal sales to Japan as you beat plowshares into bullets

Item #3- Oil sales from the USA to Japan. In the late 1930’s the USA banned them. Japan was not war with the USA so the oil sale ban was a not friendly move. I can’t say that it forced the invasion of Indonsia, but oil was an issue for Japan.

  56. Eph_Rove says:

    54. THAT SURE SOUNDS LIKE CHANGE WE CAN ALL BELIEVE IN!!!

    No clown.

It was a statement about releasing FUTURE detainees.

Even you can see the difference.

It is the left that wants them released.

    And look what happens.

  58. Howard Dean says:

Or did you blame Clinton for 9/11.

    Comment by Aaron_in_TX — 1/23/2009

The planning and traing took over 2 years.

Get an old calendar and work your way back.

  59. Eph_Rove says:

Right you are, Joe. When you mentioned Cobb, I recalled the exchange.

  63. The Joker says:

I hereby dub BHO “THE PROM KING PRESIDENT”. He has good looks, and speaks well, and may be popular (with his own party) but he hasn’t got any experience, has no accomplishments, and has no clue what to do especially when SERIOUS issues happen.

  64. The Joker says:

This TARP2 stimulus plan is such a joke. The money won’t even be released or spent for 1-2 years???? BY then the recession will be over. This money is nothing by a grab by dems to dole out as gifts to certain interest groups. In other words – it’s a payoof to dem supporters?

I just can’t f’in believe that this is happening. How is this legal?

The republicans need to block this or I’ll never vote for them in the future.

The best solution for stimulating the economy is to suspend ALL income taxes for everyone for 6 months. That way, all tax paying people will get money back into their pockets for them to spend or save as they see fit. That way we don’t have to worry about the government pissing it all away on pork projects and special interest groups.

  65. jones says:

    Joker,

Don’t lump Obama in with all Prom Kings.

    I take offense.

  66. Brandon says:

    Toomey won’t challenge Specter.

Former Rep. Pat Toomey (R-PA) has decided against a repeat run for U.S. Senate in 2010, “turning instead toward a possible bid for governor as he reaches out to Republicans statewide to assess his potential candidacy next year,” the Morning Call reports.

  67. George aka Freemarketer says:

Good news about Toomer; anyone from PA, will this build some cooperation between Specter and Tommey, or will Arlen run a solo campaign and leave the PA GOP in the dust?

  68. JulStol says:

    Go PAT!

    I

  69. Eph_Rove says:

    63. Whe serious issue arise?

Did you hear the press conference today?

Fox Reporter: “Is there a war on terror?”

    Hussein clone: “um uh…um…um..uh”

  70. Eph_Rove says:

    63. When serious issues arise?

Did you hear the press conference today?

Fox Reporter: “Is there a war on terror?”

    Hussein clone: “um uh…um…um..uh”

  71. The Joker says:

Eph – I did hear that news clip. Very concerning to me. They (Obama and the libs) can not even come to grip with the fact that terrorists are at war with us and vice versa. They naively think that if they call it something nice, like a “tea talk negotiation” that will somehow reduce the inherent risk we face.

  72. Bitterlaw says:

Toomey will get crushed in either race. Pennsylvania will not elect a hard-right conservative. I wish that we could but we can not.

As or the inability to state there is a war on terror, I am reminded of John Adams. During the debate in Congress before the vote on independence, Adams complained about those who opposed the measure. “King George has declared us in rebellion. Why can’t they?”

  73. JulStol says:

    Bitterlaw,

Toomey will not get crushed. He’s not nearly as abrasively hard right as you seem to think he is. Heck Bush came closer than McCain to winning PA. What does that tell you?

  74. Tim says:

Stating there’s a War On Terror, I have no problem with. There is one, of course. And, it will probably never end. There will always be terrorists, somewhere.
Using that to give us carte blanche, justifying anything we choose to do? Now, that is where I had my problem with the previous Administration.

  75. bonncaruso says:

Looks like some republicans are just about to go into cardiac arrest here, judging by their postings.

    rofl….

  76. TGCA says:

I think its funny how the media is not making a coordinated effort on how “stupid” Caroline Kennedy made herself look over the last month. She made a complete fool of herself publicly and proved that she was not ready for prime time. Palin made similar missteps, only she was much more articulate, but was not given the same pass as a Kennedy.

The arrogance of the Kennedy’s was beyond any this country has ever seen. They have finally got their come uppance.

Thank God! Hopefully this will be the end of the Kennedy’s, the most corrupt political family in American history filled with rapists, adulterers, addicts, thieves, incompetents, liars, and reckless behavior causing the deaths of others. Good riddance!

  77. TGCA says:

I don’t think Bonn and Tim will be laughing so much if one of these terrorists should happen to take one of their family members in an act of jihad because it won’t be long before we start seeing some terrorist attacks in the US if we release terrorists here like in Europe. I want to see their Dukakis moment when they theoretically defend the rights of terrorists.

I pray we never have to see any terrorst activity here in the US again, but if it is inevitable, then I hope it impacts those that support the terrorist rights 1st because they will be partly to blame because their support helps push politicians to make bad decisions that impact the country so they should 1st feel the pain before the rest of us. Just like many of the idiots who supported communism and ultimately suffered under that system, terrorist-suppoprting Americans should be accountable for their actions as well.
