McCain’s Pathetic New Ad

I can’t believe the McCain campaign actually thought this ad was a good idea.

Now the McCain campaign has been hit or miss with many of their ads this year. This one is borderline pathetic and I can’t believe McCain was actually willing to put his “I approve this message” at the end. I actually cringed when I saw this the first time. I guess I should at least be happy they found a new person for the voice-over for the ads….

I actually think it is a great idea — it highlight’s Obama’s hubris.

  2. lisab says:

    britney is a republican

  3. Howard Dean says:

Susan Estrich who is an Obama supporter gets attacked too:

“Heinous,” one woman wrote to me, in describing my thoughts, and me. Heinous? Oh, of course, and racist and stupid. Thanks. Such comments came not from conservatives who oppose Barack Obama but from true-believers who are ready to condemn anyone who has not joined the revival.”

  4. Bill says:

i didn’t think it was so bad.

  5. sam says:

I don’t see what’s wrong with the ad. Tells it like it is.

  6. maelstrom says:

I’m good with it. I think the attacks need to be stronger.

  7. GeauxLSU says:

Sorry Dave. I disagree. I think this is a good ad. I think this is an issue that people are starting to think about and this cements the idea that he may be good on American Idol or a Reality Show, but he’s not ready for prime time.

  8. Dave says:

I guess I might be alone on this one. I don’t disagree with the theme or message that Obama is an empty suit. I guess my real problem was the execution of the ad by including pictures Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. It just seemed downright silly to me and detracted from everything else in the ad.

  9. sam says:

I think Britney and Paris have as much substance as Obama.

  10. Rachel says:

Sure, with carefully-rehearsed speeches written by someone else, it’s not hard to impress. Interviews can be filled with as many “ums,” “uhs,” repetitions and mumblings as you like, since the adoring press will be busy delighting in every syllable of your prepared speeches and gushing over your sweaty back muscles.

  11. rdelbov says:

For a Hotel heirness Britney certainly has become a punching bag

  12. Hugh says:

    Sorry Dave

Great ad. Problem with us republicans is we like ads with substance, but with the average american that gets their news by reading a headline at starbucks this is the type of ad that works great. Its an ad going for a feeling and that works well with the squishy middle of America. I think McCain is painting a picture of Obama that will be hard for him to shake.

  13. Robbie says:

Paris Hilton’s parents are very upset about the ad. According FEC filings, the parents donated $4600 to the McCain campaign. Why not use Lindsey Lohan and Angelina Jolie?

On a more important note, Larry Sabato appeared on Larry Kudlow’s show tonight. Sabato said McCain must roll the dice and choose either Palin, Jindal, or Ridge. He believes another boring white guy (Pawlenty, Romney) would doom McCain’s campaign.

  14. Bitterlaw says:

I just hope Obama doesn’t start wearing short skirts without underwear like Britney and Paris.

  15. Rachel says:

#14 – He still hasn’t told us what this “change” is he’s wanting to bring, so I don’t think we can really count anything out yet.

  16. Indy says:

#14 Wouldn’t mind it if Michelle started doing it.

  17. Dariel says:

Sorry, Dave, I have to agree with the majority. I think this was a great ad and very appropriate. When you are a “rock star”, you are lumped with other “rock stars”. The ad illustrates what the Obama campaign is all about – all bluster, no substance!!

  18. nick says:

See Ben Stein’s comments re: the McCain campaign — the most pathetic since Dole 96…

The campaign has no message. Whether you think Obama’s call for change is genuine or a load of crap… at least it’s consistent.

  19. Aaron_in_TX says:

I’m kind of neutral on the ad. It seems to speak to people who already have this image of Obama. It’s almost as if the admakers read the right-wing blogs, then wrote a script that reflected the prevailing sentiment.

Most of the news shows I saw basically agreed with Dave, that the inclusion of Britney and Paris was ridiculous.

I also agree with the above comment that McCain needs to quit this negative campaigning and get a message. Obama has at least a consistent message.

  20. Aaron_in_TX says:

Lisa’s right, Britney is a republican. She was the one who said we shouldn’t question President Bush because he is the president. We should just believe him.

  21. Erich says:

I actually like the ad, better voice over…and I doubt Britney would know how to cast ballot, let alone who to vote for…

  22. Aaron_in_TX says:

    I wasn’t kidding about Britney’s comments. I’m glad she’s on the president’s side.

  23. lisab says:

mccain has a couple of good messages to hammer obama on, but for some resaon he has not really done it that consistently or well.

a.) drill or die — obama and dems would rather see the poor suffer

b.) iraq & afghanistan. obama was against the surge and actually wanted to reduce troops in iraq. his views match the europeans as seen in his recent tour.

c.) taxes & restriction of trade

he can always let the side groups do the negative stuff, like not visiting the soldiers, the huge obamego, and ludacris etc. best for mccain to focus on his message.

obama has no issues, so it would be good if mccain made the above three issues. so far he hs been wishy washy

  24. Aaron_in_TX says:

McCain needs to be careful about the war since if he argues too forcefully it will make the public just want to be done with it altogether and Obama offers that possibility. People generally agree that the war was a bad idea to begin with, and McCain has to be careful to not remind them of that.

Obama is generally for free trade, according to his website, he just wants to amend NAFTA slightly. Unless you actually think there should be less trade.

An economic minister from India was on CNBC yesterday. He cited ethanol production as the #1 reason that food prices were such a problem for the poor in his country. He called it the “foolish transfer of land to the production of energy.” You can lay that at the hands of Bush, who has been one of the biggest ethanol proponents, and also his Brazilian buddy Lula.

  25. joestemme says:

Dave again proves that he can be fair and objective when circumstances call for it – and still be a passionate conservative.

Just saying so you don’t have to blame democrats entirely for the poor’s problems worldwide. I’m sure that Brazilian poor are suffering too, largely due to their own president’s actions. Again I believe the primary reason for this is the corruption of their leadership.

who would vote for this race baiting clown. unreal.

They’ve already tried that with Michelle. Aaron_in_TX”

no, michelle has been characterized as an angry black woman.

these type of songs make it look like obama is the candidate of angry african americans who want

    pay back

there is a big difference. obama cannot afford to lose the white vote

  33. Tim says:

Crummy ad. Not well done, at all. Attack ads should have far more substance than this one does.

  34. Everett W. says:

What’s the argument here? Attracting large crowds is bad????

Advertisements should have a shread of believability for swing voters to grasp. Virtually no swing voter can believe that Obama is as empty-headed as the Spears & Hilton personas.

The dredging up of these TMZ faves by the McCain campaign only trivializes the debate.

  35. Tina says:

How is this an attack ad? It goes after the Obumbler on Energy and taxes. There’s nothing in dispute.

I just did not like the start of the ad with Britney and Paris.

But to say that its a racist ad (white chicks with black man) – see the Daily Kukos site or that its negative – are laughable.

  36. L TePaske says:

Libs love to use the word racism, it makes them feel superior.

  37. sam says:

If they are talking about the ad, then it is hitting home.

  38. Rachel says:

Here’s what I posted on the previous thread after seeing Drudge’s headline:

Do any of the Dems still want to claim Obama isn’t trying to make this about race?

If you don’t support him, you’re a racist. Never mind the fact that whenever he speaks we see Carter.

    It worked.

Yes, this ad is pathetic. As I said in an earlier thread, this is a desperate and silly ad.

Since when do you have to be a compassionate conservatism to recognize such foolishness?

I think it is a great ad! Bring out to the forefront the ridiculus campaign of a man who was in office 143 days before wanting to become president. He has no accomplishments and he is riding the wave of the “rock star”…what a sad, sick commentary on our nation…Keep it up McCain…great strategy….I think the next one should show the rapper Ludacris and his new smash hit in which he calls Hillary the “B” word and says McCain should be paralized. The caption that follows should say, “Another one of Barack’s best buddies speaks out”
What is sick, liberal extremist the dems have nominated.

most memorable McCain add to date…all sizzle no substance..We get it!

  46. jesse valdez says:

This is sooooo old school. I can not believe that this ad uses BRITNEY & PARIS in a politcal ad.

I hope one of them or both sues McCain’s campaign.

If he wanted attention, he got my attention and let me tell you this is exactly the kind of thing we all are sick and tired of. The games, the lying, the broken promises, and the old school bull-sh*t.

Its been done over and over and over.

Why can’t we get a canidate that can inspire congress to help make changes now. We have heard the talk, now lets see the dam walk!

    “ANYHOW”

This AD is truly pathetic! I was leaning to vote for a Republican canidate for the first time but now this IDIOT “McCain” will never get a vote from me.

Its truly sad to say that if I had to vote tomorrow I wouldn’t vote for either canidate.

  49. tgca says:

    Hey Aaron:

Younger voters today are no different than ones in the 80’s and 90’s. No disrespect because I was once there myself but those that are less than 30 tend to be more self-indulgent and care about their own wants, needs, and thoughts before others. They tend to look towards the near term and do not consider the much larger impact of their decisions and behavior. They tend to be less persuaded by others because they are constantly struggling to prove a point or to be taken seriously. However, as people age, this phenomena tends to change. They usually become more mature, accept differing points of view, and learn when to pick their battles. They then are not as insecure about themselves and don’t feel the need to constantly prove their worth. I think it is because as we age we accept our mortality and find that it is not all about “ME” and that other things in life are more important. I can certainly attest to that and have seen that in most people I know within my age range. My outlook changed drastically as I got into my mid-30’s. Don’t worry though…we will await your return from the dark side as you age. :-)

P.S. The above change only applies to conservatives because we all know liberals never grow up and mature or care about anyone but themselves.

    j/k…kinda :-)
